December, or Siqiñģiļaq (The month when there is no sun), is my favorite time of the year!

Putting up/ creating Christmas deco, family gatherings, and gift exchanges are some fun seasonal activities. But my favorite parts are the late morning sunrises, cozy sweaters and a hot cup of coffee.

Wishing you all a wonderful holiday season! And check out the current sales in my store!

*Traditional is Medicinal*

Learn to make Spruce Sap, and traditional Native First Aid

Brought to use by Fairbanks Native Association

Our Graf Rheeneerhaanjii youth gather spruce pitch to make medicinal salve. Sap is collected in the early spring and fall, while the air is crisp, to make collection easier. Sap is frozen and given to our elders who visit.

Youth are taught to put positive thoughts of healing and regeneration into their spruce salve preparation, in order to benefit the user for healing, a tradition that has passed generation to generation.

A Gwich’in elder once said, “If I had nothing else in my medicine cabinet, pitch could do it all.”

This was provided FNA's Graf Rheeneerhaanjii.

November is National Native American Heritage Month.

During National Native American Heritage Month, we celebrate Indigenous peoples past and present and rededicate ourselves to honoring Tribal sovereignty, promoting Tribal self-determination, and upholding the United States’ solemn trust and treaty responsibilities to Tribal Nations.

America has not always delivered on its promise of equal dignity and respect for Native Americans. For centuries, broken treaties, dispossession of ancestral lands, and policies of assimilation and termination sought to decimate Native populations and their ways of life. But despite this painful history, Indigenous peoples, their governments, and their communities have persevered and flourished. As teachers and scholars, scientists and doctors, writers and artists, business leaders and elected officials, heroes in uniform, and so much more, they have made immeasurable contributions to our country’s progress.

To read President Joe Biden's 2022 Proclamation on National Native American Heritage Month in full, click the link: https://www.whitehouse.gov/briefing-room/presidential-actions/2022/10/31/a-proclamation-on-national-native-american-heritage-month-2022

Alaska Native Education

In 1974, the Fairbanks North Star Borough School District (FNSBSD) applied for and was awarded an Indian Education Title VII, Part C (PL 100-297) grant, to create the Alaska Native Education (ANE) Program which serves American Indian and Alaska Native students. The program is advised by the ANE Parent Committee, as required by the Office of Indian Education under the grant.

After parent input and review of student records, the program evolved and expanded in the 1980's to provide more direct ANE student services such as academic tutoring, attendance monitoring, and cultural activities.

Currently our program utilizes a model of service with the goal of increasing academic achievement in math, reading and writing, and school attendance.

The program provides support through:
