What can early modern maps really tell us? At our recent lecture, Dr. Erika Monahan explored the first atlas of Siberia and challenged us to rethink maps not just as representations, but as sources of environmental knowledge.

From sea ice patterns to winter travel routes, these maps reveal how people understood and navigated the Arctic centuries ago.

🧠 Learn How to Listen, Ask Better Questions, and Understand People’s Stories. This spring, students interested in clinical work, advocacy, community-based research, or graduate school are invited to enroll in PSY F480: Qualitative Social Science Research. Offered in person on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 2:00–3:30 p.m., this course gives students hands-on experience learning how to design and conduct qualitative research that centers people’s lived experiences.

In this class, students will practice designing a qualitative study, conducting open-ended interviews, collecting real-world data, and making meaning from stories and narratives. You’ll learn how qualitative methods complement the quantitative tools introduced in earlier research courses—and why listening carefully to people’s experiences is such a powerful research skill.

This course fulfills a requirement for the Graduate School Preparation Concentration and is especially valuable for students planning careers in psychology, social services, advocacy, public health, or community-engaged research.

The course is taught by Christine Kindler, a clinical psychologist whose work focuses on trauma, memory, intergenerational storytelling, and how individuals and communities make meaning after adversity.

📍 In person | CRN 34979
📘 Prerequisite: PSY F275

If you’re wondering whether the course is a good fit, you’re encouraged to reach out to [email protected]

Cold War history, but make it cinematic. This spring 2026, HIST F434: Topics in American Film History invites students to examine the Cold War, roughly 1945 to 1991, through popular films that shaped public understandings of communism, democracy, conformity, and national identity. You will analyze movies as historical sources and explore how cinema responded to, and influenced, global tensions.

The course meets Tuesdays and Thursdays, 3:40 to 5:10 p.m., with both in person (CRN 36287) and online (CRN 36282) options.

For more information, contact Dr. Michael Letzring at [email protected]

TONIGHT!! How did conservative evangelicals go from embracing environmental stewardship to opposing it? Join Dr. Neall Pogue, Assistant Professor of History at UAF, for a thought-provoking discussion of his book, The Nature of the Religious Right: The Struggle Between Conservative Evangelicals and the Environmental Movement (Cornell University Press, 2022).

Drawing from decades of research, Pogue unpacks how the religious right evolved from theologically rooted, eco-friendly philosophies into a political force often hostile toward environmental policy. His work explores the intersection of faith, politics, and environmentalism—asking what happens when theology meets ideology, and what that means for our planet today.
