The Northeast PA AHEC and The Commonwealth Medical College once again engaged the incoming medical students in the Community Action Poverty Simulation.Understanding the day-to-day reality of poverty is important for everyone involved in fighting poverty - from policymakers to service providers. Missouri’s COMMUNITY ACTION POVERTY SIMULATION (CAPS) is a unique tool that helps people begin to understand what life is like with a shortage of money and an abundance of stress.
During a simulation, students role-play the lives of low-income families, including single parents, people with disabilities, and senior citizens on Social Security. The task of each family is to provide for food, shelter and other basic necessities during four 15-minute "weeks.” Families interact with community resources.
Although it uses "play" money, fictional scenarios and time limits, CAPS is not a game. It's a simulation that enables our students to view poverty from different angles and then to discuss the potential for change within local communities. It's designed to sensitize those who frequently deal with low-income families and to create a broader awareness.
A special thank to the many community agency representatives who participated.

Meet our fourth summer, rural intern, second year medical student from The Commonwealth Medical College, Geetika Gupta. Geetika's internship was at Guthrie Troy and Guthrie Canton in Bradford County. While at Guthrie Troy, Geetika's preceptors were former AHEC students Dr. Kari Wood and Dr. Kristin Tofts. It is rewarding to have our former students practicing in NE PA and hosting medical students.
While at Guthrie Canton, Geetika's preceptor was Dr. Sarah Swain, a former AHEC student as well. But what was most exciting is that Dr. Swain completed her AHEC rotation in Canton with Dr. John Kirkowski. Dr. Kirkowski is still practicing in Canton.
So pictured is Geetika (left) with her preceptor Dr. Swain (right) who is standing next to her former preceptor Dr. Kirkowski all in Guthrie Canton.
A special thank you to Dr. Swain, Dr. Kirkowski, Dr. Wood, and Dr.Tofts for once again precepting a TCMC summer intern and sharing their expertise with a future practitioner.
A final thank you goes out to practice manager LuAnn Sakers who works hard behind the scene to make the Guthrie experience a success.
