Medical Academy of Pediatrics & Special Needs - MAPS We work to improve the outcome of childrens' health, from infancy into adulthood.

MAPS is dedicated to providing fundamental integrative training with a commitment to offering the most up to date therapies for the issues our special needs children face. Our training is filled with both the basic scientific research into these therapies along with the practical translation of therapies into practice. Our goal is to provide training to produce practitioners that are able to improve the outcome of our childrens’ health, from infancy into adulthood.

(Re)Defining Autism wasn't just the theme of this year's MAPS Fall Clinician Conference. It was a commitment, made out loud, in a room full of practitioners who refuse to accept that a single label can explain every patient in front of them. In practice, that commitment means doing the harder work: digging deep to understand what are the biological factors contributing to each patient’s condition rather than stopping at a diagnosis.

This is why clinicians travel from around the country and around the world to be in that room. For patients with profound autism and other complex chronic conditions who are waiting for someone to look deeper, ask better questions, and keep searching for answers that can meaningfully improve their health and their lives. This is why MAPS exists, and why this community continues to show up, year after year.

Day two brought everyone into the same room.

Today the entire conference’s lineup was built around one throughline: (Re)Defining Autism. Friday moved through what autism actually is, biochemically and physiologically, once you move past the behavioral label, into evaluation and treatment, the weight diagnostic labels carry, the genetics and biology underneath the presentation, and a session grounded in lived experience that reminded everyone in the room what gets missed before communication ever develops. By the end of it, it felt less like ten separate sessions and more like one long, deepening conversation.

And that conversation didn’t stop when the sessions ended. It just moved rooms.

Last night’s dinner had a special energy, thank you’s were exchanged, important people were remembered, heartfelt gifts were handed out, and then the evening moved into karaoke, dancing and faculty and first-time attendees sharing the same dance floor without a hint of hierarchy between them. It really feels less like a conference dinner and more like a wedding.

We hear it every conference, from people who’ve been coming for years and from people who walked in this weekend not knowing a single soul: MAPS feels like family. Not because we say so, but because of what actually happens in that room. Clinicians who’ve spent years feeling isolated in their own practices, finally surrounded by people who understand exactly what that isolation feels like. Faculty going out of their way to sit with someone new. Nobody left standing alone at the edges of the room.

One more day Philadelphia. Let’s finish this the right way.

Day one in Philadelphia is in the books. And it set the tone for the weekend.

Thursday is where the deep work begins: full-day immersion courses for clinicians ready to go further than a single session allows.

Foundations of MAPS gave newer attendees the grounding in biochemistry, immune function, gut health, and neurology that underlies everything else this week.

MAPS in Clinical Practice walked through real case studies, guided by MAPS Fellows who’ve spent years refining these approaches with their own complex patients.

And Innovations in Integrative Pediatrics opened the floor to clinicians and researchers pushing the field forward with new, evidence-informed approaches.

Three rooms. Three different entry points. One shared commitment: looking past the label and into the systems underneath it.

And when the sessions wrapped, the connection continued. Our Fellows gathered for their own dinner, while first-time attendees connected over the Foundations dinner, two different rooms, two different starting points, both carrying the same thread that runs through everything at MAPS: better care starts with better relationships between the people providing it.
