Phillips Exeter Academy Phillips Exeter Academy is a co-educational residential school founded in 1781 and serving 1,100 students in grades 9 through 12, and post-graduate level.

Founded in 1781 by John and Elizabeth Phillips, Exeter has a tradition of academic excellence, a distinguished faculty, and a long history of educating young people to find their place in the world. Exeter teaches students from all walks of life to:

• Combine knowledge with goodness
• Acquire the intellectual skills that ensure a love of learning and a lifelong commitment to helping others

Exeter's academic offerings are unrivaled: over 450 courses in 19 subject areas. The student to teacher ratio, 5:1, lets students explore the world with great support from the adults in the community. An Exeter education prepares students to use the skills learned at school in all life's endeavors. Exeter is a life-changing experience, challenging and fun. Exeter’s preps got two legendary Browns for the price of one Tuesday night.

While Dan Brown ‘82 shared advice about writing and storytelling and offered tales from his career as one of the world's best-selling novelists, he also prodded his father Dick to deliver some brief words of wisdom.

Dick Brown taught mathematics at the Academy for most of four decades before retiring in 1997. He urged the class of 2030 to allow themselves to be beginners — to try something new and be willing to fall on their face in the process.
