Reunions are just a month away! Principal Rawson '71; P'08 and the entire Exeter community are eager to greet you on campus in May. We hope that you will come home to Exeter and join your classmates for what promises to be a memorable weekend.

In case you haven't been counting, our 40th Reunion is coming up the weekend of May 3-5. Our class has always been impressive with our participation at these things. Let's make it so again! We're not getting any younger (though based on some of the photos we see here on Facebook, some people haven't aged much at all) and this is a great time to see our classmates before we all enter our 7th decade on this blue marble.

In case you didn’t get the email from John about our upcoming FORTIETH reunion, here’s the meat of it. We hope to see each and every one of you in May.

Dear Class of 1979,

Six of us were back on campus during Exeter Leadership Weekend to start planning our reunion. Our 40th reunion is the weekend of May 3-5, 2019. Please mark the date on your calendar; once again, we are expecting a great turnout and are putting together a terrific weekend schedule.

If you have not been on campus recently, you will be amazed by the numerous new buildings and the renovated spaces. Phillips Hall has been modernized, the music building has an inspiring small concert hall, our beloved “Cage” is gone, in its place is a state of the art fieldhouse, and where we remember the tennis courts there is the new Goel Center for Theater and Dance. These improvements have enhanced Exeter's sense of place and traditional charm.

But buildings do not (and did not) tell much of our story, then or now. As our religion teacher David McIlhinney said, “it is the friends you make at Exeter that is most important”. In our class, our individual successes and struggles were supported by the strong community that we know ourselves to be. As time goes on, this sentiment has made me appreciate the opportunity I had to attend Exeter more and more. I was inspired not only by my friends, dorm mates, teammates, and peers, but also by our teachers, coaches, and staff. Over the years, by attending reunions I have connected with old friends and made new friends with classmates I did not know as well. Our conversations are always interesting and thought provoking! The Class of ’79 is a dynamic, diverse, and talented group.

Expect to hear from several classmates between now and the reunion, because we want you to be an active part of the class of ‘79. Our class page will hold lots of information. . Please join it soon if you are not a member already. We encourage additions of nostalgic photos to bring back the memories.

Even if you have been distant for a long time, there are ways to get reconnected; send Kevin Boileau ([email protected]) a reply to his call for info for his column in our class notes, host a gathering of classmates in your area or meet up with some when you travel, come to reunion, make a donation to the Exeter Fund, post a photo on Facebook or come up with something you feel is a way to honor our class.

I was up at Exeter last weekend for the official opening of the new performing arts center and several performances of music, theater and dance. It was truly remarkable and inspiring! I wish I had more phots, but was just living in the moment and taking it all in!

Nice to see our library on the list!

"Phillips Exeter Academy may be a boarding school, but it has an oversized library; its shelf capacity of 250,000 volumes make it the largest secondary school library in the world.

The library is also famous thanks to its design by celebrated American architect Louis Kahn. Commissioned in 1965, Kahn structured the library in three concentric square rings. While the brick outer rings hold the exterior walls, middle rings made of concrete house the heavy book stacks, and an inner ring creates an Instragram-worthy atrium."
