Join alumni on Saturday, 6/18 at 2pm for an LGBT alumni virtual forum: bit.ly/PEA6-22LGBT

A panel of diverse alums from every decade from the 1960s to the present—queer, gay, le***an, bi and trans—will discuss their Exeter experience.

All will be invited to imagine and propose ideas to help us discover, connect and reconnect with one another safely and lovingly, authentically and vibrantly.

AROUND TOWN: George Bancroft, Class of 1811, is memorialized in DC in two locations. His name appears on one of the columns in the Great Hall of the United States Library of Congress. The second location is in the Mt. Pleasant neighborhood in DC - the Bancroft Elementary School.

According to PEA records and published histories, George Bancroft entered the Academy as an 11-year-old in 1811 and left in 1813. In Exeter's early years, a structured class system (Junior, Middle, and Senior) was not created until 1854, nor did the Academy offer diplomas until 1887. Students who attended before 1854 are class members of the year they entered, making Secretary Bancroft a member of the Class of 1811. He did not graduate, nor did anyone else prior to 1887. In those days, a high school diploma was not a requirement to enter a college or university. In 1935, the Academy opened Bancroft Hall, the last of the “new” dormitories under the Harkness Plan.

A historian, poet, and diplomat, Bancroft was appointed Secretary of the Navy by President Polk. During his tenure, he established the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis in 1845. In 1891, at the age of ninety, Bancroft passed away in Washington, DC.

Bancroft Hall on Exeter’s campus shares its name with another dormitory - a slightly bigger residential hall on the Naval Academy's campus. There, Bancroft Hall houses 4,000 midshipmen, one of the largest dormitories in the world.
