How can we upgrade to an iSTEM Challenge?

Designing this for certain applications on some other planet, while working out the calculations that quantify the relationships between force and motion in the hydraulics, equates to a cross disciplinary experience in algebra, earth and space science, physical science, and engineering CDIs from NGSS.

This part goes without saying in any PBL activity you are treating as an iSTEM/NGSS design challenge:

Writing happens throughout each step of a design practice... e.g. Before you get to build, you write to justify each design choice you've made, making claims, citing evidence and using reasoning (based upon inquiry experiences scaffolded in earlier in the design process) reinforces Language Arts Literacy practices. After you test, you write about your redesign using the same CER.

Hydroponic & Aquaponic Gardening (The Basics)
4-Day Summer Workshop:

Hi everyone, last year's participants thought 2 days was way too short, so I'm psyched to bring this workshop back to TCNJ again for 4 days this year. Practical resources, hands on inquiry and design-based experiences experiences, group settings and the makerspace environment will contribute to a strong foundation in basic agricultural and soil-less gardening techniques, lessons, system design, and safety!
We're also focused on assisting you in leading students through similar projects (while meeting and exceeding NGSS) on your own in the future!
Everything we're growing and building will be going back with you for your home or classroom!

STEM Educators welcomed, K-12, as well as any parents of STEM students, or those from business and industry that might be looking to engage in STEM education outreach.

Hydroponic & Aquaponics Gardening Workshop, with Chris Anderson... I'm giving a 4-day workshop on Hydroponics & Aquaponics - for beginners. It's all hands-on and you get to grow and build things that you will take home (or back to your classrooms) and use. Educators and non-educators (i.e. parents of STEM students, business & industry persons interested in STEM Ed. outreach) with an interest in STEM are welcomed! [email protected]

Chris and Mr. M (AP Bio teacher in West Caldwell) look back on a day well spent designing and building this classroom aquaponics system, just before the end of the year, in preparation for next year!

A big THANK YOU to all who participated in last week's 2nd Annual Spring Symposium for Instructional Leadership in iSTEM & NGSS, K-12. A copy of the agenda and presentation resources are linked here:

Panelists and speakers from eight of the 25 school districts that partnered with the center this year shared inspiring words and practical advice - including examples of programming and instruction being piloted in the field - while showcasing best practices for design-based pedagogy!

The event also marked the fourth consecutive year of collaboration between consultants/trainers Chris Anderson and Jodi Turner, whom together have provided ongoing professional development and program/facilities guidance (on behalf of the Center) to more than 100 school districts, since their outreach began in 2013!
