This summer, over 100 middle and high school students joined across three dynamic programs to tackle real-world challenges spanning robotics, artificial intelligence, and biomedical innovation.
The Department of Integrative STEM Education welcomed 40+ students to the iSTEM Summer Academy for two weeks focused on design, rapid prototyping, and automated control. In Week 1, campers used CAD, laser cutting, and 3D printing to build mousetrap cars. Week 2 challenged them to design firefighting robots to find & extinguish a candle flame. Special thanks to MathWorks for providing MATLAB and Simulink learning resources!
The Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering hosted 20+ high schoolers for its AI & Wireless Communications Summer Camp. Campers explored neural network theory, built handwriting recognition algorithms, and implemented adaptive image recognition with Python, TensorFlow, and Google Vision AI kits. They also visited MISTRAS Group to see structural health monitoring in action. Gratitude to Quanser, MISTRAS Corporation, and the Uncommon Individual Foundation alongside the ONTRACK Plus Program for sponsoring camperships.
The Department of Biomedical Engineering hosted 40+ students during the Engineering in Health and Medicine Summer Camp to explore human health and engineering design. Students built working ECG monitors, investigated neuro-prosthetics, and analyzed kidney diffusion and computational imaging. They also visited Johnson & Johnson Med-Tech (formerly Ethicon) to see suture needle production, learn about product testing, and engage in a BME career panel with employees.
