TCNJ’s Art Gallery is located on the first floor of the Art & Interactive Multimedia (AIMM) Building. The Gallery presents six exhibitions annually, including curated exhibitions featuring nationally and internationally recognized artists, the annual senior BFA exhibition, faculty and alumni exhibitions, and a juried statewide K-12 art exhibition. All gallery exhibitions, artist talks, and educational programs are free and open to the public.

My Camera is Always With Me
Professor Emeritus Kenneth Kaplowitz 50 Year Retrospective ExhibitionTCNJ Art Gallery
September 12 – October 17, 2021

TCNJ Art Gallery is pleased to announce the opening of My Camera is Always With Me: Professor Emeritus Kenneth Kaplowitz 50 Year Retrospective Exhibition, an exhibition of work by Kenneth Kaplowitz, retiring faculty member in the Art and Art History department at The College of New Jersey. The exhibition will feature more than 100 photographs and photo collages from the early 1980s through the 2010s. The exhibition will trace Kaplowitz’s embrace of evolving photographic techniques and technologies, and demonstrate his boundless curiosity and creative technical twists on photographic subjects. The exhibition will highlight several significant series of work from Kaplowitz’s career, including the Botanical Studies, Biblical Prints, Planets, and Artificial Intelligence series.

Jayln Giles-Ewell writes of her work for the show:

“As a Black, q***r woman, my artwork is simply a culmination of my experiences. I also would describe my process as an explorative study of some of the questions I have not only in regard to how I think, but how others think. Within our group show in•flux, my two pieces are essentially an extension of my questioning, in which I attempt to understand what identity means to other q***r people, and how that process of self-authenticity feels for other people.”

Lily Gilston writes of her work for the show:

“I create tactile experiences in sculpture in installation, utilizing multimedia fiber techniques. Using the natural tendencies of the materials to inform the work, I build through papermaking, needle-felting, and weaving. Handmade paper is innately about the process. Using simple book structures, I am able to transform the paper into multi-dimensional objects in Formings. Needle-felted wool adds texture to the flat planes of handmade paper. Intuitive, organic forms emanate in and around the pages, a seamless coexistence of hard and soft materiality.”

Lucia Gardiner writes of her work for the show:

“Another Year Older is an examination of nostalgia and innocence. I wanted to create a space that could further my own understanding of familial legacy and heirlooms. By combining cyanotypes, family photos, tea bags, and quilting, I was able to fuse together a narrative on adolescence and ritual, asking questions about the spaces families create out of necessity, expectation, preservation and/or sense of self. I constructed a shrine for the years that are already gone and passed.”

Samantha Leigh Kearney writes of her work for the show:

“I embrace Where I’ve Been. With ongoing works, I recreate the familiar. I use documentation to record daily life and retain memories. I spend time working towards concepts that acknowledge the mundane and capture points in time. I create models of the places I have been, places that hold significance in my life and development. I embrace the home, where life happens. People remember where they come from, become encapsulated by memories both good and bad. I am trying to hold on to things I have had to let go when I had no control. Through the use of photography and paper manipulation, I want to set the reminders to strive to do better and make a life that carries a different weight. They are a callout to myself, to the work that I do. I am here to direct my future and alter my timeline. I will ensure that I follow a different path and will not end up back where I started.”

Jamie Davidson writes of her work for the show:

“Lights, Camera, Action is a series of images that showcase fashion and glamour without the inclusion of real clothing. The goal of this exhibition is to bring a new take to fashion photography, creating something that the viewer has never seen before. These images hold an element of mystery, creating an illusion for the audience, as it is not quite clear what the clothes are actually made from. This glamorous apparel was contrived by the photoshopping of LED lights that not only create interesting shapes and lines throughout the series but also build a great deal of texture as well. The use of light and positioning of the model is important as it is what truly portrays movement in these still images.”

“Where’ve you been, Where you are is a self-reflective installation showcasing the artist's journey to transform their body; I am addressing a struggle with body dysmorphia, stress eating, and the extent they go to change their body. This is expressed through the use of photography and found objects.”

“La Sala is a living space that bombards the audience with Mexican imagery; this space is inspired by my Mexican heritage. The installation includes screen prints, a weaving, digital media, and a painting as well as items found in a typical Mexican household. The various mediums describe who I am as an artist.”

“The Colored Aura Series features four oil paintings that capture the likeness and the colorful aura of the subject. These pieces explore mood through the vibrance that enhances the tone of how I perceive the subject. The subjects appear realistically portrayed while the backgrounds pay tribute to the medium. I strived to create work that was fun, lighthearted and compelling in order to personally combat the events of the last year and a half.”

Addison Cooper writes of his work for the show:

“This series of pastel works, #1-8 is a close examination of experiences in my life that have affected me in ways that continue to resonate with me to this day. Using pastels in these studies has allowed me to rapidly work and rework my ideas until I was able to successfully capture the emotions which these experiences are tied to. My intention for this series was to ultimately develop a cohesive grouping of work where each element can provide individual narratives, while simultaneously acting as a part of the whole. This can be seen with the repetitious imagery in each piece, which also acts as a representation of these recurring thoughts and experiences.”

“I strive to deconstruct and unlearn the over-sexualization of the female body as I produce an array of felt breasts and mixed media breastplates for my boutique-like installation Body Armor. Similar to how one shops for bras or jewelry, a diverse collection of soft, fuzzy, strange breasts along with paper-dipped multimedia breastplates are elegantly displayed to pick and choose from.”

“Epoch is a reimagined context of time, through the geographic exploration of the stalactite and stalagmite. Through installation, this geological feature is a used metaphor to constitute for the actions that create outcomes, Even a drop computes to the overall growth of a stalagmite, as do the events that impact our lives. A self-portrait if you will, up for interpretation, Epoch is the process of time of human experience. “
