Qualifications

To qualify for the position of Early Childhood Education (EEC) Teacher, an applicant must:

possess a recognized Certificate in Early Childhood Education, or an equivalent, as established by the local licensing office responsible for daycare regulations;

demonstrate an understanding of and love for young children and enthusiasm for developing a happy, creative atmosphere for the children;

demonstrate an appropriate philosophy in regard to the importance of a quality program for young children and demonstrate a commitment to applying that philosophy;

be able to work as a team with Teacher's Assistants and other staff employed in the center;

be able to assume responsibilities attributable to the Teacher's Assistant, as needed;

familiarity with the local daycare regulations.

Job Responsibilities

Teachers assigned as Room Teachers must ensure appropriate delegation of tasks with other teachers/assistants in the room to maximize program effectiveness.

Room Teachers are expected to take a leadership role and maintaining harmonious and professional relationships with their colleagues in the room.

Observing and recording a child's developmental progress in conjunction with team members.

Participate fully in routine care and responsibilities in relation to assigned children.

Treating all children with dignity and respect.

Setting up and administering detailed program plans based on the philosophy of the center and ensuring appropriateness to the developmental needs of the children. Program plans must enhance language, motor skills, cognitive skills, independence and problem-solving. Incorporating parental feedback when developing these plans to address the individual needs of the child.

Prepare and maintain a safe and stimulating play area. If required, seek assistance from the Director or Supervisor in this manner.

Gearing the program to the individual needs of the children with special attention to his/her needs, interests, talents, individual style and pace of learning.

Considering the individual child in relationship to his/her cultural and socio-economic background.

Working as a team with the other Teachers and Teacher's Assistants in the assigned classroom so that duties are shared.

Working as a team member in the daily operations of the center's activities.

Incorporating parents, students and volunteers into the program and supervising them. Training students as required.

Evaluating the performance of students, teacher aid and volunteers.

Helping with general housekeeping tasks that are required as part of the duties, or as requested by the Supervisor or Director.

Being responsible for effective and practical care of all equipment, toys and supplies (e.g. Sanitation, repairing torn books, and bringing broken toys to the office for repair).

Being responsible for maintaining a safe, clean, stimulating environment for children in the assigned classroom and for the center.

Establishing and maintaining a warm supportive relationship with the families of the children on a daily basis and providing ongoing information exchange.

Investigating and utilizing other community resources.

Maintaining a professional attitude with fellow colleagues and parents.

Participating in performance appraisal of own skills and abilities.

Participating in the organization and development of fund-raising activities.

Participating in the professional organizations that work for the improvement of early childhood education.

Participating in staff meetings, professional development workshops and parent-teacher interviews as directed by the Supervisor or Director.

Function as a resource person for Teacher's Assistants and providing information and guidance in all program areas.

Assessing programming needs and initiating requests for purchases of learning material.

Keeping accurate and current records (e.g. Attendance, medical administration records) as required by the center.

Attending professional development seminars as requested.

Other duties as required.
