The Center for Applied Research is a pillar within USI's Outreach and Engagement that connects key resources to researchers and developers.

Opportunity Development combines key resources with the purpose of discovering opportunities and partnering with faculty, staff, students and experts to create and deliver solutions to individuals, organizations and communities to achieve long-term success and prosperity. Through our Resource Development Specialist and the Center for Applied Research, we leverage University resources to solve needs. Through our USI-Crane Technology Partnership and technology commercialization initiatives, we support technology transfer and the creation of an innovation ecosystem with military technology. Through the I-69 Innovation Corridor and assets at Innovation Pointe, we use our nationally recognized facilitation and innovation services to support regional growth and economic development.

Steven attended the Crane Regional Defense Group Annual Stakeholder Meeting yesterday at WestGate Academy, and re-connected with former colleague Chaze Patrick with INvets Indiana. It was a great opportunity to hear about NSWC Crane's current priorities and network with various members of the DOW ecosystem.

Mason Eickhoff (MFET, '26) and Evalynn Voyles (MFET, '28) had the opportunity this week to make a presentation to IEEE (Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers), in which they provided an overview of the repair and restoration the Center for Applied Research conducted on the Old Vanderburgh County Courthouse bell tower over the last several years. Special thanks to Larry Bristow from the Old Courthouse Foundation for joining us and providing additional historical context on the courthouse and its clock system.

Mike Harvey came to campus this week for Cameron to give him a demo of the proof-of-concept of his patented Proforemance mat. While the image doesn't fully explain what his product does, we are exploring how we will build a full-scale prototype, which can help anyone "improve their gameplay".

The University of Southern Indiana and Amcor had the opportunity to present our Applied Innovation Partnership to the Indiana Commission for Higher Education. A huge thank you to our Amcor partners for joining us and sharing their valuable perspectives and expertise. We are looking forward to continuing this partnership to give our students more practical, real-world experiences and enhance this talent pipeline!

Graduations are always bittersweet. We are excited for the future careers of our graduating seniors, but also recognize the incredible talent that is leaving our team. So incredibly proud of this team! Our Applied Innovation project concluded today with a final presentation to leadership teams from and University of Southern Indiana. Over the course of the semester, we were tasked with creating a new product innovation... and our students delivered TWO! Major kudos to these juniors and seniors for all of their hard work!

Dr. Luke Barr came to campus to review our modifications to his Polyform. Cameron Miles (Electrical Engineering, '26) explains the layout of the hardware while Luke tests the new functionality. This makes another great addition to the product line!

Ron Boren came out to campus to review his prototype while Jonathan explained some of the design decisions that have made it more efficient. We can't tell you exactly what it's for, but we're going to continue to work with Ron so that his invention "makes a splash."

The Center for Applied Research partnered with Cleveland Cliffs again this year for the Southwest Indiana STEM Challenge. A huge thanks to Southwest Indiana Workforce Board for organizing, Oakland City University for hosting, and the 28 teams from 9 schools who participated. A special shoutout goes to MSD of North Posey County Team #11 for winning the USI/Cliffs challenge, "Real-Life Rocket League"! We're already looking forward to next year's event!
