Meet Shawn Crabtree, a Bodyworks Massage Institute Grad! We asked Shawn a few questions about his experience at BMI to help people thinking about a career in massage therapy get a sense of what to expect.
——————————————————————————
What year did you graduate BMI?
"2017"
What was it that prompted you to seek massage therapy training?
"After receiving my first massage, I knew I wanted to one day be able to provide massage for others. "
Why did you choose BMI for your training?
"In 2016, I contacted Bodyworks and met with Emily and Cecile. After speaking with them, I knew very quickly this was the right fit for me. I asked them if they would be able to work with me as I had a very unorthodox work schedule and was afraid of conflicts. I remember them saying, “if you want this and are willing to work for it, we will help see you through.” I’m forever grateful for all they’ve done for me. Not just introducing me to massage and giving me the skills to begin my career but seeing the passion in me and helping me bridge a dream into reality. Each day that I walked through the door of the school, they created an environment where I could leave the stress of life at the door and focus on more than just learning massage techniques, but rather, preparing me to help others through massage. "
Where are you currently living and are you still practicing massage therapy?
" Still living in Evansville and practicing massage in my office downtown. "
How has being a massage therapist influenced your life?
" It has influenced me in so many ways, but it has helped me become a better listener and allow me to connect with clients to better serve their needs. Practicing massage reminds me that part of my destiny is to help others and aid in their path of wellness. "
Please add anything else you would like to share with potential BMI students.
"Ultimately, trust your instincts. I denied what my inner voice was telling me for so many years and when I finally started listening, it led me to help others and doing so, still fulfills me today. If any part of you is telling you to consider massage as a path, follow it. You will never regret trying and will be better for the experience, no matter the destination. Also, those that serve others tend to neglect themselves, so remember that it isn’t selfish to practice self-care, but rather, a must. "
