Today, we remember September 11, 2001, and the lives forever changed by that tragic day.

In June, the USI Chamber Choir had the opportunity to visit New York City and spend time at Ground Zero. Standing in that space offered a meaningful moment to reflect on the bravery, sacrifice and resilience that followed the events of 9/11.

As we mark 25 years, we honor the lives lost, remember the heroes who answered the call and hold their stories in our hearts.

📢 Fall Faculty Colloquium Series kicks off September 9!

Join us for the first Faculty Colloquium of the semester at 11 a.m. Wednesday, September 9, in Kleymeyer Hall (LA 0101).

Dr. Andy Buck, Chair of Sociology, will present “Power and Praise: The Case of the Soviet Union.”

What can letters to Soviet newspapers reveal about power, loyalty and social relationships? Buck’s research examines how public praise functioned as a form of symbolic capital, and how it helped reinforce Soviet authority.

The event is free and open to the public!

📅 Mark your calendar for upcoming presentations:
• October 1: Dr. Taylor Petty, “Community Perceptions of Nonconsensual Po*******hy Cases”
• November 13: Dr. Amy Montz, “Anatomy of Empathy: Elizabeth Gaskell’s Legacy of the Female Gothic”

🎬 USI is making its mark at the 2026 Nashville Film Festival!

Only the Lord Will Set You Free, a short film featuring the work of USI Communications and Media faculty, students and alumni, will screen as part of the festival’s Graveyard Shorts program, running September 24-30.

Produced by Dr. McManus Woodend, Assistant Professor of Digital Media, the film features current USI student Colin Millsap ’26 on sound design and location sound. USI alumni Jordan Barclay ’05, Esther Addis ’25 and Kaz Mull ’25 also contributed to the production in photography, acting and production roles.

While the film is not a USI production, the project highlights the real-world, on-set experiences students and alumni are gaining as they prepare for careers in the film industry.

With USI’s Film concentration launching this year, opportunities like these are helping students build experience, connections and careers beyond the classroom. 🎥

Learn more about the film and find screening information through the Nashville Film Festival schedule. https://nashvillefilmfestival.org/2026-festival-schedule/
