Meet the Lesson Teacher: Greg Tuley

Greg Tuley is an accomplished percussionist, educator, and working musician whose career spans decades of performance and teaching. Greg graduated from the University of Evansville with a bachelor’s degree in music education. His extensive performance experience includes touring with the Chicago Cavaliers Drum and Bugle Corps, performing with the Evansville Philharmonic Orchestra, along with playing for a variety of local and regional bands.

❓ How long have you been teaching private lessons?
I’ve actually been teaching privately for 50 years. I was teaching percussion lessons to private students right after High School.

❓ What’s a piece of advice you wish you had known when you were younger?
Learning more about the business side of music should have been learned earlier. Music Colleges should offer Music Business courses.

❓What is your favorite part of teaching your students?
The best part about teaching is seeing the student light up when they have reached a certain level and see them become more confident.

Meet the Lesson Teacher: Jeffrey Hampton

Jeffrey Hampton is a pianist and piano teacher with a degree in Piano Performance and a Piano Pedagogy certificate from Indiana State University. For nearly two decades, he has had the joy of guiding students of all ages and levels toward a lifelong love of music, from first lessons at the keyboard to advanced repertoire. He also serves as pianist and choir director at Resurrection Catholic Church, where he shares his passion for music with the wider community.

❓ How long have you been teaching private lessons?
Close to 20 years.

❓ What’s a piece of advice you wish you had known when you were younger?
To use slow practice more often.

❓What is your favorite part of teaching your students?
My favorite part of teaching is getting to witness my students discover their own musical voices and individual passions in their musical life.

Meet the Lesson Teacher: Kevin D**g

Kevin D**g is a graduate of Ball State University where he earned his Bachelor of Music Education. During his time at Ball State he also completed graduate-level coursework in flute pedagogy and wind band conducting. A multifaceted educator, Kevin has taught band classes, flute masterclasses, and marching band. In addition to teaching, he is also an active performer. Throughout his career, Kevin has made notable contributions to the local music and theatre scene, performing with various organizations, including the EVSC, UE, Warrick Co., and the Jacob Ball Wish Fund. Kevin regularly plays each summer with the Evansville Symphonic Band and serves as a substitute flutist for the Evansville Philharmonic Orchestra during their concert season. His teachers include Shauna Thompson, Cara Dailey, Jill Dean, Leanne Hampton, and Mihoko Watanabe. As a passionate advocate for music education, Kevin is eager to continue fostering musical talent and using his skillset to enrich the community.

❓ How long have you been teaching private lessons?
I started teaching private lessons as a junior in high school through a private lessons initiative started by the EVSC. It was a unique experience that gave me teaching opportunities while also offering students affordable private lessons. I learned a lot, and realized I love sharing my knowledge of flute.

❓ What’s a piece of advice you wish you had known when you were younger?
Your life experiences will ultimately shape your musicianship and teachings. Be brave and go gain as many life experiences as you can.

❓What is your favorite part of teaching your students?
My favorite part of teaching is seeing their progression over time. I love seeing students find their sound, grow their confidence and artistry, and become their own self-sufficient musicians.
