75 years ago today, the Castilian Literary Society became the Chi Lambda Chapter of Alpha Omicron Pi at the University of Evansville.
For 75 years, our chapter has continued to grow and strengthen because of the dedication, leadership, and sisterhood of generations of members. As we celebrate this milestone, we're honored to share a glimpse into Chi Lambda's early years through the memories of alumna Jane Purdie, who joined AOII in the 1950s.
Jane's memories of Chi Lambda in the 1950s:
✨ Chi Lambda meetings were held in the Union Building.
✨ Women students who lived away from home stayed in houses near campus, as the only dormitory was for men.
✨ Jane served as Chapter President during her senior year and helped plan AOII's first suite in the lower level of Moore Hall, which opened in Fall 1960.
✨ Tuition was approximately $150 per quarter.
✨ Students used rotary phones, electric typewriters, and lived in a world with no computers and very few televisions.
✨ The first Aces basketball games at Roberts Stadium were played during the 1956–57 season.
✨ Homecoming featured a Queen's Court, floats, a parade down Main Street, and a dance, with sororities and fraternities working together to create elaborate floats.
Why AOII?
"The lifelong friendships I made as an active member and the friendships I've continued to build with AOIIs of all ages—from Chi Lambda and chapters across the country—have been one of the greatest blessings of my AOII experience." — Jane Purdie
Thank you, Jane, for sharing your memories and helping us celebrate 75 years of sisterhood, leadership, service, and friendship at Chi Lambda. Here's to the women who built our foundation and to the generations who will carry our chapter forward. 💙🐼
