This past weekend, we proudly recognized Zerah Priestly Carter, the first African American to graduate from the University of Evansville. She broke barriers and paved the way for future generations of students, leaving a lasting legacy on our campus.
In her honor, we dedicated a commemorative bench to serve as a space for reflection, recognition, and continued inspiration.
We also had the pleasure of hearing from Michael Woodard, who played a key role in advocating for the former Diversity and Inclusion now known as the Center for Inclusive Excellence.
Additionally, we were honored to hear from Zerah’s great nephew, who continues to represent and carry forward her legacy here in Evansville.
Her impact continues to inspire meaningful change within our community.
Lastly, we were able to recognize our seniors at the
UE African American Alumni Association Luncheon. They have all worked incredibly hard to get to this point and we are proud to honor them.

As we wrap up this week, let’s celebrate the power of diversity by recognizing Angela Davis, a woman who has dedicated her life to fighting for justice, equality, and change. As an activist, educator, and author, she has been a leading voice in civil rights, prison reform, and Black feminism, continuously challenging systems of inequality and advocating for those whose voices are often unheard.
Her work continues to remind us that diversity is more than just representation but it is about equity, inclusion, and understanding the experiences of others. When we embrace diversity, we create stronger communities, encourage new perspectives, and move closer to a more just and equal world.
