Celebrating Maria Montessori's 151st birthday today!
'The child is richly endowed with powers, sensitivities and constructive instincts that as yet have neither been recognised nor put to use. In order to develop, they need much broader opportunities than they have been offered thus far. Might not this goal be reached by changing the entire structure of education? Society must fully recognise the social rights of the child and prepare for them and the adolescent a world capable of ensuring their spiritual development' (Montessori, 1997, p.128)

The teacher prepares the environment of the Montessori classroom with carefully selected, aesthetically arranged materials that are presented sequentially to meet the developmental needs of the children using the space. Which aspect of the prepared environment do you appreciate most?

Thanks to all the families (and the children who broke into their piggy banks) to donate to Save the Children last week to support those folks "Down Under" in need from the terrible Australian wildfires (and now, floods.) We raised $429.96 in the past 2 weeks, which Teachers Pay Teachers will double for a whopping $859.92! Needless to say, the Kinders were thrilled with their efforts--and your generosity!

This past month, our Kindergartners have been studying all about Australia and talking about the recent wildfires and hardship that many of our friends “down under” have been facing. The Kinders wanted to do something to help, and decided to solicit donations to Save the Children, a humanitarian organization that has been providing child-friendly safe spaces in New South Wales and Victoria to help children who have been affected by the trauma, stress, and school closures due to the rampant wildfires.
And we’ve found a way to DOUBLE your donations!
Teachers Pay Teachers, a website that sells digital educational materials created by teachers, is matching donations made to the Save the Children’s Emergency Fund through the first week of February.
Here's the super-easy way to help Midwest double our donations to our Australian friends:
1. Please donate to Save the Children and they’ll give you a donation receipt.
2. Send that donation receipt to [email protected] by Friday, February 7th, and we’ll send them off to Teachers Pay Teachers to have the amount matched.
Thanks so much for your support! We know that the Kinders will be proud of their efforts to help those in need.

The students and staff at Midwest Montessori School would like to thank all of our supporters for their continued support through the year! We wish you a safe and fun Thanksgiving holiday where we all reflect on our many blessings and reach out to support the many in our communities in need!

Ah, the joys of the Kindergarten year! This friend brought home his very first phonetic reader one night, read it to his brother, his parents, and face-timed it to his grandparents--and then the very next day wanted to share it with his younger classmates as our StoryTime began after lunch. Only in Montessori are we able to nurture and witness this kind of blossoming, as the world of reading opens up and the children can't wait to share their joy with each other!
Our Midwest Montessorians said goodbye to the 11 painted lady butterflies (that we watched grow from caterpillars!) during one of the few recent dry periods at Tallmadge Park.
All right, weather watchers! Please help us keep our fingers crossed for clement weather this Friday, May 10th for our 27th Annual Trike-a-Thon to benefit St. Jude Children's Research Hospital! So far, Midwest has earned more than $34,000 for this worthy cause. Come on out and support our hale and hearty bikers, rain or shine, from 9 to 11:30 at Tallmadge Park across the street from the school.
