For this reason and others, I count it such a great honor to lead this center into its half-century mark—a historical moment in which Garrett-Evangelical, its denomination, and Africa-descended people the world over are urgently wrestling with important questions about God, equity, and justice.” - Taurean J. Webb

Last week, the CBE was excited to host a small reception in honor of the anthology written by the founders of the Garrett Black Seminarians (student group that, in the late 60s/early 70s, banded to pressure the administration to make tangible its commitment to Black life and experience. Thus founding the Office of the Church and the Black Experience, later evolving into the Center).
The founders and their families, pictured with Garrett-Evangelical President, Dr. Lallene Rector and CBE Interim Director, Taurean J. Webb. The founders (back row, L to R): Bishop Jonathan Keaton; Rev. Gessel Berry, Jr.; Rev. Julius Del Pino; Rev. B. Herbert Martin, Sr; Dr. Ervin Smith (not pictured).
Stay tuned as the CBE commemorates its 50th year anniversary in 2020!
