🚢 On this day in 1985, an SAE helped make one of the most famous discoveries in maritime history.

On September 1, Brother Robert Ballard (California - Santa Barbara '65) helped lead the expedition that located the wreck of the Titanic more than 12,000 feet beneath the North Atlantic, 73 years after the ship sank.

The discovery was years in the making. Ballard had set his sights on finding the Titanic as early as 1972. After the Titanic discovery, Ballard went on to locate the Bismarck, President John F. Kennedy’s PT-109 and completed more than 150 expeditions throughout his career.

According to a 1994 profile in The Record, Ballard was once asked to choose his occupation from 90 categories on an SAE alumni questionnaire. His answer? He chose his own and wrote, "Explorer."

Ballard continued to support and return to his home chapter, California Eta, even as his career took him around the world... and beneath it.

After a difficult childhood, Todd Buchanan (Southern Mississippi '90) arrived on campus as a first-generation college student without a roadmap for what came next.

An unexpected act of generosity gave him the opportunity to join Sigma Alpha Epsilon, where he found brotherhood, mentorship and a community that challenged him to grow. That experience helped set Todd on a path of leadership, from serving as chapter president and student body president to becoming a U.S. Army officer and, today, a President and CEO in the financial services and insurance industries.

In a recent Orlando Sentinel commentary, Todd reflects on his personal journey and why he believes fraternities play an important role in the lives of young men today.

The True Gentlemen of Washington Beta are returning to Washington State University!

This coming Thursday, September 3, a new generation of Founding Fathers will officially re-establish the chapter, continuing a legacy that first began at Wazzu in 1915.

The historic evening will also include the unveiling of the lions at the chapter house, a powerful symbol of SAE’s return to campus and the beginning of a new era for Washington Beta.

More than 111 years after its founding, the legacy continues with a new generation of True Gentlemen ready to carry Washington Beta forward.

Sigma Alpha Epsilon is proud to announce a new partnership with Thriveworks, connecting collegiate and alumni members with information and access to mental health services independently provided by Thriveworks and its licensed professionals nationwide.

More young men are choosing to prioritize their mental health:

🔹 1 in 4 Gen Z men are currently seeing a mental health professional.
🔹 49% say they want to seek mental health support.
🔹 Thriveworks has seen demand among Gen Z men grow 12% in the last year and 55% since 2023.

Through this partnership, SAE members can learn more about and independently access Thriveworks’ nationwide network of licensed providers, with in-person and online services and daytime, evening and weekend appointment options.

Brotherhood can provide a powerful support system, but some challenges may call for professional support, too. This partnership provides members with information about an additional resource available to them should they choose to seek it.
