Medill senior Michelle Sheen (BSJ26) spent her time at Northwestern studying how design can shape the way journalistic stories are consumed. She double-majored in journalism and Asian languages and cultures (ALC), and also pursued the Segal Design Certificate to learn more about design thinking and visual communication. π°
Sheen was recently featured in the alumni magazine for being a Northwestern Scholarship recipient. "There were so many ways that I was able to take advantage of the funding and the financial aid that I received to experience new things," says Sheen. "All of these experiences have definitely changed my idea of what I can do and what I can pursue."

This summer, Medill will launch a new Military Reporting Project in collaboration with the 1st Infantry Division at Ft. Riley, Kan., giving students a rare opportunity to report while embedded with troops. πΊπΈ
As part of this partnership, students will be periodically embedded with 1st Infantry service members at Ft. Riley and on a European deployment.

A group of MSJ students traveled to Mexico City in early 2026 to report on stories shaping life in and around the city β from women reclaiming public art spaces to efforts to preserve centuries-old farming traditions. π²π½ Their stories were featured on WTTW - Chicago PBS!

Since 2005, newspapers in areas with U.S. military bases have disappeared at a rate four times higher than the national average. And the remaining outlets are covering these bases less and less β since 2016, there has been a 40% decrease in the number of stories about local military issues. ποΈπΊπΈ
Zachary Metzger of Medill Local News Initiative was recently on CNN to share findings from his study on loss of local news near U.S. military installations.
