“Robert Wolfe, the founder and chief instructor of Itten Dojo, began martial arts training in 1975 and has taught since 1985. Wolfe has trained in swordsmanship since 1990 and aikijutsu/aikido/jujutsu since 1992. He holds the ranks of rokudan (sixth-degree black-belt) in aikijutsu, rokudan in Isshinryu karate, a kirigami menjo (certificate) in Ono-ha Itto-ryu (Sokaku-den) kenjutsu, was awarded a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Japanese Studies from Bucknell University in 1978; and is certified by the NRA to teach the Refuse To Be A Victim® crime prevention and personal safety seminars. Wolfe is a 2025 inductee to the Pennsylvania Karate Hall of Fame.”

What an honor it was to attend the MJER Iaido Weekend Seminar with Nick Suino Sensei, hosted by Wolfe Sensei of Itten Dojo 🙏🥋🗡️ I was absolutely blown away by the depth of knowledge that each of these instructors possess and I can’t wait to learn more (and more) from them in the future.

Shoshin Nagamine left us with a strong foundation for the idea of self study. One of his principles for mastering karate:
“Do not be dependent upon others for your improvement.”

O’Sensei also described Karate as a lifelong process requiring self-discipline, hard training, and your own creative efforts. I read recently that Nagamine Sensei, at one point, was inviting too many foreigners to his dojo and had to stop because his students were getting mad 😂
•
So, I don’t interpret anything O’Sensei has said as a need to train in isolation, but rather a need to train with as many people as you can, AS WELL AS yourself. Get to class when you can, get some training in on your own, and make sure your habits align with your goals 🥋
