In addition to teaching biology, I also teach physical science—and one topic I love covering is work and machines. Nature, of course, is the ultimate engineer.

Take this adorable click beetle, for example. When flipped on its back, this little insect doesn’t use its legs to get up—instead, it clicks. That sound comes from a spine on its thorax snapping into a groove, releasing stored energy like a spring. The result? A rapid, powerful launch into the air that helps it flip upright or even escape predators.

Big News! We are thrilled to announce that The Reptile Youth Alliance has been invited back to National Reptile Breeders Expo in Daytona this year and we are bringing our science lab with us! Make sure to stop by booth for hands on science experiments, fun science demonstrations, photo opportunities with our reptilian lab partners, and opportunities to learn why reptiles and science go hand in hand! 2025 marks the 10th anniversary of the International Day of Women and Girls in Science. Gender equality in science is crucial for building a better future for all, yet women and girls continue to face systemic barriers and biases in pursuing scientific careers.
Closing the gender gap in science requires breaking stereotypes, promoting role models to inspire girls, supporting women's advancement through targeted programs, and creating inclusive environments through policies and actions that promote inclusion, diversity and equity.
