There is an excitement in the air this week — the Academy’s first Recitation of the year is right around the corner!

Rafiki Classical Academy is grateful to the Rafiki Foundation for allowing our growing school to host Recitations and choral programs in the Foundation’s PAD (Printing and Distribution Center). Thank you Rafiki Foundation!

It is a rainy day at RCA and earthworms abound!

Did you know earthworms are easier to find on rainy days? As the ground becomes saturated with water, earthworms seeking more oxygen will inch to the top layer of soil.

It has been a fun day for our students—searching, finding, and enjoying some of God’s smallest creatures!

Sometimes a picture is worth a thousand words…

In the foreground: a ring of cards to help students memorize the Westminster Shorter Catechism. Each student in 6th and 7th grade has their own set of cards. They are preparing to recite portions of the Catechism at the October Recitation.

In the middle ground: students clad in batik aprons, made by brothers and sisters in Nigeria. They lean in as they observe the effects of changing temperature and air pressure on water molecules.

In the background a whiteboard is hosting:
-sketched castles used in a grammar game earlier that morning;
-the memory verse for that week (Philippians 2:8-9) written in cursive;
-the multiplication tables the students are currently reviewing;
-and a copy of a papal bull issued against Martin Luther in 1520.

The students recently learned in history about the 1520 papal bull, which called for Luther to stop his teaching and for his writings to be burned. Luther responded by writing three more books and burning the bull. The class set fire to a portion of their copy of the papal bull, and now it hangs on the whiteboard as they continue their study of the Protestant Reformation.

And all throughout the middle ground and background of this picture are tiny, little foxes a prankster flooded the classroom with after the students learned of Samson’s 300 foxes released upon the Philistines—a narrative encountered in their eight-week study of the book of Judges.

Not quite a thousand words, but one has the point: ‘tis a rich and engaging education these students are receiving!

Every Wednesday and Friday afternoon, the mats are rolled out, students put on their Gis, and RCA’s Agora turns into a Jiu-Jitsu studio!

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is known as the gentle art and is one of the most practical martial arts for self-defense.

Students of Jiu-Jitsu grow in confidence, respect, range of mobility, and hand-eye coordination. They also learn how to control their emotions under pressure and use their body in a controlled manner.

Because of these benefits, which align with RCA’s student outcomes, Rafiki Classical Academy is pleased to be offering Jiu-Jitsu in partnership with One Forty Four MMA.

It is 1:45 on Friday afternoon, and all is right in the world at RCA…

First grade is sprawled out through halls and classroom, coloring their traced bodies which will be filled with etchings of organs in the upcoming weeks…

Bright notes of Bach float into the halls, the music comes from the Agora where second graders are immersed in the melody and in their newest treasures from the library: “The Secret Garden”, “The Adventures of Robin Hood”, and “The Little House on the Prairie” to name a few…

And in the midst of it all, a sweet duo is caught with their prized copies of “Sense and Sensibility”. They know the teachers are reading it, and they want to as well…

And all is well in the world of RCA on a Friday afternoon.

The First Grade class was more than happy to strike a pose with their teacher after yesterday’s read-aloud. They had just enjoyed hearing a Liberian folktale titled, “Two Ways to Count to Ten”. The book holds a special place in their teacher’s heart as she has served at the Rafiki Classical Christian School in Liberia for the past two summers.

Between 8:40 AM and 9:15 AM, if you open any classroom door at Rafiki Classical Academy, you will see hymnals on desks and Bibles open. RCA students start every day studying the Bible.

These two pictures were taken moments apart this morning—first grade captivated by the Word of God and down the hall second grade also captivated by the Word of God. The whole school is studying the book of Judges this term and we all continue to be captivated by this one amazing truth: God is faithful in the midst of His unfaithful people.

And how can we not end every day in doxology?

“Praise God, from whom all blessings flow;
Praise Him, all creatures here below;
Praise Him above, ye heavenly host;
Praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost.
Amen.”

Two thumbs up for Writing & Rhetoric! Writing & Rhetoric leads students in imitating good forms of writing so they can grow in the art of communication.

On this particular day in Writing & Rhetoric class, these young men were working on perfecting their craft of the chreia. A chreia is a short essay praising a proverb.

Because their class is currently studying the 1500s in history, they were writing chreias based on a proverb of a great leader of the 16th century — Queen Elizabeth I. This last Tudor monarch of England famously said, “Cowards falter, but danger is often overcome by those who nobly dare.”

In the next couple weeks, these students will read aloud their chreias on this proverb to their class — showcasing their developing writing, knowledge of this historical period, and elocution skills.

First things first…

Kindergarten started their day today as they do every day—studying the Bible. Currently, the whole school is studying the book of Judges. This morning, after singing the hymn of the week, “My Jesus, I Love Thee,” Kindergarten settled in to hear the Scripture read aloud for the day’s lesson. To help focus their minds and bodies to receive God’s Word, the students recited together these words from memory:

“I open my Bible and listen to God. He tells me what I should do, and all of His stories are true. I like my Bible; it is special to me, just like a friend I see every day. So now I am quiet, my hands are still, as I listen to what God wants to say.”

What a joy it is to be part of a school community that reads and studies God’s Word as the first class of every school day.

“But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.” — Matthew 6:33

First-grade math at RCA is age-appropriate, hands-on, and moves from the concrete to the abstract. Recently, this has meant our first graders are working with number bonds.

Number bonds are pairs of numbers that, when added, equate to a certain sum. The pictured students built a number bond for 7 using 2 and 5. During this math lesson, they also practiced making 7 with 1 and 6, 3 and 4, and 0 and 7.

Number bond practice like this builds understanding of the part-whole relationships amongst numbers, which helps students more comprehensively and easily practice addition, subtraction, and mental math. Plus, by these young ladies’ faces, you can see that making number bonds is fun. There is great satisfaction in discovering the order in which God designed our world!
