Reading Resistance: Using TribalCrit and Indigenous Lens in the High School Classroom

November is Native American Heritage Month; this session is a timely workshop that addresses the skill of reading texts critically, interrogating them for elements of colonial mindsets and erasure that distort Indigenous peoples and histories. This session will begin with an overview of how Danielle developed a tool (based on the work of Deborah Appleman) for examining texts through an Indigenous lens. However, our reading should not stop there; an essential action is praxis—taking steps to combat erasure and surface the silences in texts by surfacing and incorporating Indigenous voices, histories, and perspectives. Attendees will have hands-on time to practice using the tool, as well as an opportunity to explore a unit plan and rich resources.

CATE Presents:

Danielle Witten, a first generation college student, has nearly two decades of teaching experience at the secondary and university levels. She has received the Carlston Award for Outstanding Teachers of America and the 2020 CJMA Nick Ferentinos Award for Advising Excellence. Her pedagogy is guided by the belief that education is a fundamental right and that even in a failing educational system, individual teachers have the capacity to positively impact students’ learning and lives.

Cost: $10 (all proceeds are directed to CATE teacher scholarships)

We are so proud of our teammate Maggie!

🔦SPOTLIGHT ON A LOCAL EDUCATOR : Maggie Peters

Margaret "Maggie" Lee Peters (Yurok/Karuk) is a traditional basket weaver, regalia maker and dedicated preserver of cultural practices. She takes inspiration from her Elders and follows in the footsteps of her father, Chris Peters, President of the Seventh Generation Fund, and mother, Suzanne Burcell, a retired Community and Economic Development Specialist.

Maggie has served as an educator/administrator/coach for 17 years on the Hoopa Valley Reservation and has spent the last two years working with tribal communities all over Northern California to develop the Native American Model Studies Curriculum as a Learning Specialist at Humboldt County Office of Education (HCOE) which will be rolled out statewide in 2025.

Maggie is a graduate of Leadership Studies - Cal Poly Humboldt - Online Degree Completion Program for Education Leadership in conjunction with C-TIE's Grow Your Own Administrator (GYOA) program. She also is a mentor to a Modern Youth Internship Academies (MYIA) high school student intern studying in the Education, Early Childhood, and Family Services industry sector working with her at HCOE.

Maggie's educational philosophy is deeply rooted in culturally responsive teaching, trauma informed approaches, arts integration and social emotional learning. She offers educators and youth/educational organizations professional development through a foundation of growth mindset, self compassion, and empathy to create safe learning environments where students can thrive, eventually fall in love with acquiring knowledge and as a result, always open to diverse perspectives and communal support.

This phenomenal traditional basket weaver, regalia maker, and mother of three amazing children has been nominated for the National Indian Education Association Board of Directors representing the Western Region by Blue Lake Rancheria's Tribal Education Agency Executive Director, Alison Robbins, in recognition of Maggie's tireless advocacy on behalf of children, educational sovereignty, and culturally and linguistically responsive educational environments.

Please join us in celebrating Maggie's devotion to her community and education of future generations. Thank you, Maggie, for continuing to be an inspiration 🌟
