Fun with Your Car
Join Us Oct. 10–11 for the Great River Road Tour and the Route 66 Ramble Regional TSD Road Rallies

Looking for some enjoyable driving time and a bit of adventure with your favorite wheels? Want to enjoy country roads, and perhaps even see a bit of fall color?

We—the St. Louis Region, SCCA—have a plan for you.

Join us Oct. 10–11 (Columbus Day weekend) for our Great River Road Tour (Saturday) and Route 66 Ramble (Sunday) Regional road rallies. Both are daylong motoring adventures (modest variety) and traditional SCCA time-speed-distance (TSD) road-rally events. Combined, they comprise the 2026 edition of our not-very-annual Regional Gateway Cup Challenge for road-rally teams. You are welcome to run both rallies or just one, as your inclination and time permit.

What will you need? The information is available in the link below, but here is our “executive summary.”
• A vehicle, a driver, and a navigator.
• A smartphone or tablet with the Richta GPS Competitor App installed. (This is the GPS rally app we use for classic TSD road rallies; it is available free at Google Play or Apple’s App Store.) A second smartphone or tablet for a GPS odometer app would be helpful also.
• A clipboard, pencils, and paper, etc., the usual kit for a navigator.
• An inclination to enjoy the day.

Both rallies are organized as simple SOP (seat-of-the-pants) events. No high-tech road-rally equipment is needed—or allowed.

Also, what you don’t need is a prepared rally car, i.e., rollbars, skid plates, or other off-road safety or competition equipment. Your everyday driver or beloved weekend cruiser with regular seatbelts, a working speedometer/odometer, and legal for regular road use will do just fine.

Our Regional Great River Road and Route 66 Ramble rallies share the weekend with the SCCA’s 31st United States Road Rally Challenge, which we are hosting for the fifth time. The Great River Road Tour explores the country roads that parallel the Mississippi and Illinois river valleys in Illinois, while the Route 66 Ramble explores, not only Historic 66, but also the country lanes that parallel the Mother Road in Illinois. It also helps commemorate the centenary of Route 66, as well as helping celebrate southwestern Illinois’ Great Rivers and Routes “Last 100 miles of Route 66 in Illinois” festival Oct. 10.

Our weekend headquarters: The Comfort Inn in Edwardsville, Ill., which is where the Sunday’s Route 66 Ramble begins. Saturday’s Great River Road Tour begins at the Melvin Price Locks and Dam 26 on the Mississippi River in Alton, Ill.

STL Region RoadRally Reminder: Register Now for Our Sept. 12 Event

September is upon us; so it’s time—high time—to register for the St. Louis Region’s next RoadRally Sept. 12: Continuing Education: Rally with the March Hare.

The start is familiar: Sunset Overlook on Bluff Road in Columbia, Ill. The finish is familiar; it’s the same as the start. And the rallymaster is familiar, Tom vonHatten, the author of, and rallymaster for, our 2024 summer Rally School series, hence the handle for this event.

Although it’s been a quiet summer for the St. Louis Region when it comes to hosting road rallies, there’s been a lot of road-rally effort happening in the background. On Sept. 12, we have our first Regional road rally since May 30, and on Oct. 9–11, we host the 31st United States Road Rally Challenge (USRRC), with headquarters in Edwardsville, Ill.

This is the fifth time the St. Louis Region has volunteered to host the USRRC, an important part of the SCCA’s annual National Road Rally Championship since 1995. This year, as in 2018, the last time we hosted the USRRC, we have combined the three National USRRC rallies with a pair of daylong Regional road rallies that comprise (again) our USRRC Regional Gateway Cup Challenge. (Count ’em–that’s five rallies in all. Whew!)

Update: Previewing the 2026 USRRC in St. Louis Oct. 9–11

August is upon us, and we’re hard at work polishing the three rallies for this year’s United States Road Rally Challenge® (USRRC), organized and hosted, of course, by the St. Louis Region. The three rallies: the South by Southeast National Course Rally Oct. 9, the Great River Road National Touring Rally Oct. 10, and the Route 66 Ramble National Touring Rally Oct. 11.

The USRRC is SCCA road-rallying’s annual triple-national weekend, similar to—but not quite like—the Runoffs® or the Solo® Nationals.

Actually, to be correct, we’re organizing five rallies Oct. 9–11, because we’re adapting the routes of Great River Road Tour and the Route 66 Ramble and offering them for regional competitors as part of our Region’s every-now-and-again Gateway Challenge Cup, which is a strictly SOP (seat of the pants) event aimed at the beginning or occasional rally team. For our Gateway Challenge Cup rallies, only minimal timekeeping is required and no fancy navigating equipment is allowed. Motor along at the assigned average speeds, have your navigator keep you on the rally route, and enjoy the day. That’s it.

So, what to expect from the USRRC weekend regardless of the rally, or rallies, you’ve chosen to run—good organization, great roads, great hospitality, and fun driving. That’s our goal.

And yes, we hope to see you in October.

SCCA RoadRally: 2026 USRRC Preview #1

Somewhere in southern Illinois, not far from the Kaskaskia River, the lunch location for the USRRC’s South by Southeast National Course Rally Oct. 9.
