Another successful weekend at in the books. Looking forward to 2027. If you are at all near NW Montana, I’d suggest saving the date (last weekend of Feb.) next year. All kinds of great products, outfitters, and a surprising variety of more. Also, tons of guns and gear to win!

We're entering what is typically our coldest month of the year in NW Montana. Let's take a look at hypothermia.

Field rewarming is possible for mild and some moderate hypothermia. However, if patient doesn't improve or hypothermia progressive, evacuation is necessary.

Remember: preventing cold injury is a lot easier than treating it...Stay Warm

We'll look into prevention and treatments soon.

Some survival shelters built over the past few years. This style is very warm (especially paired with a fire), weather resistant, and easy to build. Participants are encouraged to experiment with different materials so they know how to adapt to the environment. This design can easily be transformed into a lean-to or open ended for more mild weather. There are also endless additions; the world is your oyster.

Our Intro to Wilderness Survival this past weekend where we spent the day giving a crash course on all aspects of surviving a backcountry emergency. Participants built an all-weather shelter, learned about water sourcing and treatment, played with fire, made rescue signals, and more. The were in season! As always, we had a fun and engaging group of outdoorsmen and women!

Our 2026 schedule will be dropping soon after a couple months of private events and courses. Stay up to date or schedule a private course for your group at ARTOSSURVIVAL.com

Check out our student Noah’s first bow drill fire. He had never tried it before and had great success. This is not a beginner’s survival skill or even something you should rely on for having to make fire in a wilderness emergency. However, by completing this task, Noah proved that he can construct a fire when all other options have been exhausted. Great job!

When you have created an ember with a bowdrill set, you have come quite far. However, although you have your heat source and fuel, you still need oxygen to complete the trifecta. There are multiple stages to making fire by friction, but the final one can be the most devastating if you fail to follow through after all that hard work. You must continue adding more and more oxygen to the heat source, folding the fuel into it to finally get that long awaited flame. This takes patience and persistence.

Let us guide you step by step through each phase of a bowdrill fire as well as many other skills and principles at ARTOS Survival. Our Wilderness Survival Standard is coming to July 25-27. Sign up at ARTOSsurvival.com today!

Reps, reps, reps. Doing a full patient assessment is an important part of patient care and finding out what may or may not be wrong. The assessment process is a just slightly less involved version of the same assessment system used by EMS. It is very complex and can be confusing to do in real time. However instead of months, these students got it all down in a couple of days! They were able to successfully assess and treat patients in multiple mock scenarios over 3 days.

Another Wilderness Survival Standard in the books. Students this past weekend worked overtime to earn a complete wilderness survival and wilderness first aid certification.

Pictured are a few skills we trained in that look deceptively easy and intuitive when seen on TV or IG but are absolutely not: signal mirrors, ferro rods, harnessing convective current for fire, and weatherproof shelter building.
