Back to School with DISE! 📚

Getting ready for a new year of Direct Instruction Spoken English (DISE)? Don’t forget one of the most important first steps: Placement Testing!

Why it matters:
🔹 Identifies the right starting point (DISE has 3 entry points!)
🔹 Ensures students begin at their correct skill level
🔹 Builds confidence and sets them up for mastery
🔹 Prevents frustration from being placed too high or too low

Start the year strong by giving every student the right foundation for success.

We are inviting a select group of educators to become DISE Innovation Partners. Innovation Partners are educators committed to improving English language instruction for multilingual learners while helping shape the future of Direct Instruction Spoken English.

As an Innovation Partner, you will receive complimentary access to the digital edition of Direct Instruction Spoken English (DDISE) in exchange for implementing the program with appropriate students and sharing experiences through periodic feedback, brief interviews, and, when appropriate, classroom data or testimonials. Together, we will continue improving instruction for multilingual learners.

Dr. Kathleen Madigan answers the question: How are students applying what they are learning in Direct Instruction Spoken English (DISE) outside of the DISE lessons?

DISE is an explicit, systematic instructional program that helps English language learners in grades 4 and above acquire a functional mastery of spoken English in less than a year. Learn more at eapublish.com.

Strong implementation in September begins long before the first day of school.

A few thoughtful steps now can make next year’s launch smoother:
Update and organize placement information
Plan for and carry out as many placement tests as possible for incoming students
Identify likely starting points for returning students
Ensure materials are complete and accessible
Schedule any needed training or refreshers

Having clear structures in place at the beginning of the year reduces cognitive load — for both teachers and students. When systems can be predicted, instructional energy can focus where it belongs: on student learning.

🌟 Success Story Spotlight!

Meet Kathryn Raza, Instructional Coach at Modesto City Schools. As the MTSS coach, Kathryn has been leading the way in using DISE to support newcomer English learners.
During intervention blocks, Kathryn and her team of paraprofessionals have seen incredible growth:

✔️ Students with no prior English passed mastery tests on their first try
✔️ Newcomers gained confidence to communicate in class and on the playground
✔️ Teachers noticed happier, more engaged students who were eager to participate

Kathryn shares how DISE not only gave students the tools to build foundational English but also the confidence to connect with peers and thrive in school.

One of the biggest shifts I've seen in classrooms is this: Students aren't trying to "figure out" English on their own. When instruction is clear, structured, and practiced out loud, you can actually see the difference. The energy changes. The confidence changes. The outcomes change.

End-of-year fatigue is real. Protect these five practices — they are grounded in what we know about how students learn:

1) Clear signaling before every choral response supports attention and coordinated retrieval.
2) Strong unison responding increases active processing for all students.
3) Immediate, precise correction prevents errors from becoming encoded.
4) Brisk but appropriate pacing sustains engagement and momentum.
5) Accurate data recording ensures instruction responds to student performance.

If lessons feel less focused, check the response rate first. Active student engagement is a core principle of effective learning. The more students retrieve and produce language, the stronger that learning becomes.

Are students:
• Responding frequently?
• Responding together?
• Responding clearly?
• Receiving immediate feedback?

These are not routine compliance measures. They are instructional decisions rooted in the Science of Learning.
