The Response Issue
Problems persist across the globe. We hear about them frequently, but we don’t always learn about the responses to these problems. Negative news reports flood mass media channels and typically don’t include any solutions, often leaving us to wonder what we can do to help.

So, in the eighth edition of OR Magazine, we report on six workable responses across Oregon.

Solutions journalism is a reporting approach that takes the problem narrative of a story and flips it 180 degrees. It unveils responses to problems by presenting evidence of success, potential limitations and insights that can help others respond, too. America’s trust in the news media is low, but solutions journalism might help restore the broken trust with impactful and rigorous reporting of viable responses to social problems.

Incorporating solutions journalism techniques, 19 reporters, multimedia journalists and designers collaborated to create The Response Issue. We found interesting efforts on our campus and around the state, such as inclusive academic programs and residential living spaces, nonprofit organizations partnering with each other to create change and new approaches to old environmental problems.

Our overarching goal is that you gain insight from our stories about actions for change in Oregon and that you will be inspired to respond, too.
