It's 5:00 pm on the Thursday after Carnaval. Where is your Brazilian Portuguese instructor? Well, if it's Bené Santos and Simone daSilva, it's not on their way home after a long day of classes. Nor are their students. No, they're all at Global Scholars Hall (GSH) for a special presentation on the dances and food that make Brazil's celebration of Carnival known throughout the world. While Bené gave a bilingual presentation to her students and guests about the customs, costumes and dances of Recife (fevo), Salvador (pipoca), and Rio (samba), Simone was upstairs in the GSH making a special batch of pão de queijo (bread rolls made with cheese and cassava flour). Of course, everyone had a great time! And, as happens so often in language study, a world that sometimes seems so far away and strange becomes a little more understandable and inviting.
