Stop Confusing Student Performance with Progress!

A strong language assessment should answer three questions:

1. Is the student progressing, or just performing?
2. Where exactly are the gaps?
3. What should I teach next, and to whom?

Because speaking is not one skill, and a score alone does not tell the full story. Teachers need granular data they can use to support each learner more intentionally.

The new episode of The Multiliterate Mind is live.

In this episode, Dr. Cristina Banfi reflects on the long-standing traditions of bilingual education in Argentina, where families have often seen early language learning as an investment in their children’s future.

From community schools shaped by immigrant families to private language programs that help students get an early start, Cristina reminds us that language learning is deeply connected to culture, opportunity, and the hopes families carry for the next generation.

Congratulations to the Redwood City School District Mandarin Immersion students who earned top finishes at the 50th Chinese Language Teachers Association of California speech contest! Go 🎉

Their success is a powerful reminder of what happens when students have the opportunity to build real-world language proficiency, practice communication with confidence, and demonstrate what they can do with language.

At Avant, we believe proficiency is more than a test score. It is the foundation for meaningful learning, student growth, cultural connection, and real outcomes that students can carry forward.

We’re proud to support educators and programs working every day to help students develop, measure, and celebrate language proficiency.
