Every drop of water in the Earth’s open oceans is teeming with microbial life that plays a huge role in the energy and nutrient cycles of our planet! Particularly numerous in this system are the
picocyanobacteria, including Prochlorococcus and Synechococcus, the most numerous photosynthetic cells on Earth. This Friday, Dr. Anne Thompson will share her knowledge about these cells in the last 40 years since their discovery and the opportunities that exist to learn more from these immensely thriving organisms!

FIELD TRIP TO OREGON INSTITUTE OF MARINE BIOLOGY (OIMB) UO/CHARLESTON, OR, March 27, Friday evening – March 29, Sunday morning. We are returning to the OIMB in Charleston, OR for a late winter field trip! There are several activity options including visits to the tidal pools near Cape Arago, South Slough Reserve/ South Cove walking trails, estuary birding, Golden & Silver Falls State Natural Area (an hour drive away), a visit to the OIMB-associated Charleston Marine Life Center, and a sunset walk on Bastendorff Beach. Carpools will be arranged for traveling to Charleston and these trips.
Costs: Lodging is an amazing $53 per person for the two nights. This does not include meals.
Accommodations at OIMB: Space is limited to 20 participants. We’ve booked 5 cottages for two nights with
6 queens, 4 twins, 3 bunk beds. We’ll have access to a large gathering area but the kitchen will be closed. All
the cottages have kitchens so we’re suggesting we bring our own breakfasts and lunches. Friday and Saturday will include potluck style meals.
