A Hood River native, Yasui and his family were victims of Japanese American internment and suffered from anti-JA sentiment during the wartime era. Minoru "Min" Yasui, in an act of civil disobedience, was arrested on purpose to challenge the curfew laws that applied only to Japanese Americans. A lifetime of civil rights activism followed, and Minoru Yasui’s legacy lives on in us today.
The Minoru Yasui fellowship is hosting an event honoring him on Wednesday 10/19 @ 12pm-1pm in room 142.
Panelists will include Peggy Nagae, civil rights attorney and head of the legal team for Yasui v. U.S., a case that made it to the Supreme Court and led to the posthumous award of the Presidential Medal of Freedom for Minoru Yasui.
We will also have Miles Pendleton, President of the Eugene NAACP to share his perspective, and to provide a contemporary tie-in.
We will also be joined by Weston Koyama, Japanese-American attorney and first-ever Yasui Fellow.

DisOrient Film Festival is happening this weekend!
DisOrient is the premiere Asian American, social justice film festival of Oregon. Our films–“By us, for us and about us”–break open the one-dimensional stereotype of the “Oriental.” We believe in the power of film to inform, heal and connect people. We bring power to our voice as we share our stories and advocate for social justice.
