No Molecules Required: Hacking Expanded States through Sensory Deprivation and Overload
Psychedelics are one doorway into non-ordinary consciousness, but there are others. This talk explores non-pharmacological pathways to expanded states, including profound sensory deprivation and deliberate sensory overload. From flotation REST to stroboscopic light, gong baths, breathwork, meditation, and Ganzfeld techniques, these modalities share some common neurological patterns despite the difference in methods used. Brainwave data will be presented showing striking similarities between the neural signatures of these states and those produced by classical psychedelics including alpha suppression, disruptions to the Default Mode Network, and increased brainwave entropy. Attendees will leave with a practical framework for understanding these tools as additional tools for therapeutic work, inner explorations, and preparation for psychedelic work.
