Introducing Kelsie Heffernan, who will be an incoming PhD student in our lab this fall! Kelsie has been with us the past year studying tendon properties and walking biomechanics of pregnant women and she hopes to expand her PhD research to study the pelvic floor and return to sport in postpartum women. She graduated with her bachelors in Human Physiology from the University of Oregon in 2024, where she was a member of the Brozek Lab and studied anion sensing technology in nanoparticles and was a recipient of the University of Oregon Chemistry Achievement Award in 2021 and the Clarence and Lucille Dunbar Scholarship award for chemistry. When she’s not doing science, she enjoys lifting weights, running, reading, and spending time with her two sons.

Introducing Ethan Hodgin! He will be joining our lab as an incoming PhD student this fall and has been working with us as a research assistant this summer. Ethan graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Human Physiology with a minor in Applied Mathematics from Gonzaga University in 2026. At Gonzaga University, he researched the effects of cold temperatures during exercise and created a new method to determine ventilatory threshold. Ethan’s research interests include studying environmental effects on human movement and physiology during activity and incorporating mathematical principles not often applied to the field. In his free time, Ethan enjoys running, cycling, and playing piano.
