The latest Oregon state test scores are out... and math remains a big challenge across Lane County 📊👇

According to the latest Oregon Department of Education report card results, math proficiency rates across our local school districts remain under 40%:
📍 Eugene 4J: 38% Proficient
📍 Springfield: 28% Proficient
📍 Bethel: 21% Proficient

Lower test scores don’t mean students can’t do math. Math is a stackable skill—when a student misses key foundational concepts in earlier grades, future topics like fractions, pre-algebra, and geometry start to feel overwhelming.

A student turns in this answer on a test... what’s your first move? 🧐👇

When students rely purely on formulas without stepping back to estimate, they miss huge red flags like this!

A mile is longer than a kilometer, but they are relatively close in scale (1 mile ≈ 1.6 km). If 10 miles equals over 700 kilometers, you’d be driving across entire states just to cover a short commute!

Teaching kids to ask “Does this make sense?” before moving to the next problem is one of the most powerful habits we build in our tutoring sessions.

Watermark homeschool classes are a resource for homeschool families who are looking for support, guidance, and expertise in their child’s math education.
