Thank you to Garver Engineering and the Eudora Schools Foundation for the grant to purchase owl pellets. This dissection is such an engaging and comprehensive way to end the school year. We’ve talked about homologous anatomy, adaptations, energy transfer, etc these last few weeks. Now students get to experience it with a fantastic hands-on opportunity.

(Post 2 of 2): We had a great time today asking the question, “Is the Wakarusa River healthy?” We gathered lots of data on nitrates, phosphate levels, pH, temperature, macro-invertebrate numbers, and more. Tomorrow, we will analyze the data.

Thankful for Friends of the Kaw and Joey Shondell running the show today for us!

Culminating activity for our ecology unit is dissection of owl pellets. I am thankful for our partnership with Garver USA and the Eudora Schools Foundation for helping fund this investigation!

We were able to end our ecology unit by having every single 7th grader dissect his/her own owl pellet thanks to a generous grant from Garver. This brought together several of our previous units all into one culminating project (anatomical similarities, species adaptations, energy flow through an ecosystem, etc). It is tough to keep middle schoolers engaged in May, but these owl Pellets certainly did the trick!

Again, thank you to Garver and specifically Mandy Anderson, who back in August advocated for EMS by submitting an application for the grant.

Our Hydroponic Garden has been a success since installation in January of 2020. We grew buttercrunch lettuce in a little under 50 days. Students enjoyed our meal. Round two began a little over 3 weeks ago. Thank you, Eudora Schools Foundation and donors for funding this project!

Excited to bring hydroponic gardening to the classroom. This will open the door to many different investigations (genetics, photosynthesis, transport, water quality, etc). This is the type of project that students will be able to tweak all year long. Looking to get this set up and rolling before Christmas. Stay tuned for updates. Thank you Eudora Schools Foundation and donors to the ESF - you are such an asset to this district!

Began our new unit today by creating selectively permeable cell membranes. Had a good time attempting to send different objects through!
