The Pine Creek Sustainability Fair was held this past Saturday and Fugh Hall in Etna was filled to the brim with so much passion, expertise, experience, and enthusiasm for all things sustainability! People learned about pollinators, refill products, composting, recycling and upcycling, wildlife, air quality, and so much more. There were also delicious tamale and activities such screen printing, planting potting, honey tasting, bracelet making, eco-crafts and games, fun story time, and even a bird watching hike and a creek experience! Thank you to the Etna Green Corps for including the Shaler Area Sustainability Club in the planning of the event. The students did an awesome job helping with the vision, reaching out to organizations, planning the music, hosting a table, and designing the screen print. Thank you to Three Rivers Community Foundation for sponsoring it. Thank you to everyone who came and represented an organization or a cause, and of course everyone who attended! 💚♻️🌍🌱

The Shaler Area Sustainability Club goes to Phipps Conservatory and Botanical Gardens🌱! We had a blast and learned so much at “Careers for a Changing Climate” hosted by Carnegie Mellon University and Phipps Youth Climate Action Committee. Students learned about careers in law, government, research, communications, and so much more! They participated in round table discussions with various non-profit organizations and community leaders. Ms. Nilson cohosted one of the breakout sessions - Sustainability in Education - and was able to showcase the awesome work of our students in the sustainability classes and club in the Shaler Area School District !💚♻️🌍

Today was the inaugural CHS sustainability holiday gift exchange and it was so much fun! 🎁 The rules were all gifts had to be either homemade, thrifted, regifted, from the SAHS Free Store , sustainably sourced, or purchased from a small business. Students were so creative and we had an array of baked goods, candles, clothing, reusable water bottles and mugs, art supplies, plants, stuffed animals and character collectibles, candy, sports equipment, puzzles, legos, jewelry, spa supplies, stickers, chargers, even a homemade dream catcher and a 3D printed Stitch! Students came up with creative solutions to avoid wrapping paper waste, and scroll to the end to see Gianna’s giant receipt from a recent thrifting adventure in which she found a thrifted gift for every person on her holiday list!

Did you know that over half of the solid waste in landfills comes from construction and demolition projects? Workscape Inc works hard to change this by working with DIRTT and MillerKnoll to provide their customers with durable and sustainable furniture and construction materials that are made without generating surplus or scrap material and can be moved, repositioned or reused.

We are grateful to have had the opportunity for students in the Shaler Area Sustainability Club to present their “Furniture of the Future “ project and learn about furniture and construction sustainability from these professionals! A huge thank you to Ken, Lindsay, Angela, and the entire team at Workscape for such a warm welcome, unforgettable, and inspirational experience!

In June of 2025, some amazing Shaler Area Sustainability club students and Ms. Nilson worked with CoNectar Flora To Table to provide a summer camp to elementary-aged children, free of cost. At Camp Nectar Protector, campers learned about the importance of pollinator biodiversity and the important role pollinators play in producing the food we eat, including chocolate 🍫! They studied ecosystems and how to keep them healthy, planted native plants at Rainbow Raccoon Park, and had a very special beekeeping session with Master Beekeeper Christina Neumann 🐝! Help CoNectar Flora to Table expand this programming. Visit their FB page to find out how you can help and be a part of something truly special!

How cool is it that Reimagined Recycling is able to take this baby pool filled with polypropylene plastic ( #5) and recycle it into a beautiful plastic sheet instead of it ending up in a landfill?!? Some members of the Shaler Area Sustainability Club stransformed one of these sheets into 3 amazing side tables with the help of a CNC machine (thanks Mr. Wells!), some thrifted lamp bases, some wooden blocks, a drill, some glue, paint, and a ton of creativity! Currently, they are on display at the new space of the Pittsburgh Glass Center at 5431 Penn Ave! The final day of the art show is Saturday, and they will be on display from 10 am to 4 pm! We are happy to report that they will be going to their new home after the show, as they have all been sold.a
