Counting in Hinono’eitiit (Arapaho Language)

When we learn numbers and counting in Arapaho, there’s something important to understand: we have three ways of counting!

We have our basic numbers, which we use for things like counting on our fingers or doing math.

But when we are counting actual things, the language changes depending on what we are counting. We have one way of counting animate things and another way of counting inanimate things.

The pictures attached show all three ways of counting from 1–10:
• Basic counting
• Counting animate things
• Counting inanimate things

As you read/listen, pay attention to how the numbers change. You’ll also get a better understanding of what is considered animate and inanimate in Hinono’eitiit.

Arapaho Phrases of the Day 🗣️

Konooko’eikoohu3i’ — They’re running around partying (right now)

Kooko’eikoohu3i’ — They run around partying

Niikooko’eikoohu3i’ — They run around partying (habitually) 😂

Notice the small changes within each phrase, but how those little changes affect the meaning of the whole phrase?

That’s one of the things I love about our Arapaho language. ❤️ Our language can be so descriptive; small changes can tell you when something is happening and even how regularly it happens.

Arapaho isn’t just about translating English word-for-word. There’s a whole way of thinking built into our language.
