Bison are moving across parts of their historic range in patterns that scientists say have not appeared for a century.

Their return can change grass height, soil conditions, plant growth, water flow, and habitat for other species.

Bison graze, trample, wallow, and carry seeds across wide areas. Those actions can create small habitat patches that support insects, birds, and plants.

Effects depend on herd size, rainfall, land management, fencing, and local ecology. Returning bison does not solve every conservation problem.

Indigenous nations have also led major restoration efforts, reconnecting cultural practices with an animal that holds deep meaning.

Watching bison move across open land offers more than a striking scene. It shows how one returning species can alter an entire living system.

speak the language. We only have 30-50 fluent speakers left! Arapaho is a living language and the only way to keep it alive is to learn and speak … Nuhu’ Hinono’eitiit beeteeno’ o
our language is sacred … we treat it as such. We learn and speak and it will guide us in our Arapaho Way of Life … We offer classes at the Tribal College on Thursdays from 9-11 am and family language class on Sundays from 10:00 am - 12:00 pm. Come n learn and speak our Hinono’eitiit!
