🍯 Days at the Apothecary • A Little Sweetness

There are medicines we reach for because something hurts.
Plants we turn to when the body is asking for support.
Practices we return to when life feels uncertain.

And then there are the things we sometimes forget we are allowed to reach for simply because they bring pleasure.

This week, I've been thinking about receiving.

Yesterday, in my WindWork, I welcomed Mari:
Gift • Accept Your Rewards.

And that teaching has stayed with me.

Because receiving doesn't always have to mean waiting for some enormous blessing to arrive.

Sometimes receiving looks remarkably ordinary.

A cool morning.
Something finally ripening in the garden.
Someone making time for you.
A meal eaten slowly.
A cup of tea while it is still warm.
A spoonful of honey.

🍯🌹

At the apothecary, one of my favorite little expressions of sweetness is Necuhtli - Rose & Cinnamon Whipped Honey.

Honey whipped until it becomes soft and creamy, with rose and cinnamon folded into it.

Floral.
Warm.
Gently spiced.

And especially lovely stirred into tea, spread over warm toast, spooned onto fruit - or, admittedly, eaten directly from the spoon.

There doesn't always need to be a more complicated reason.

And perhaps that's part of what I'm learning as September begins.

Not everything nourishing has to come through struggle.
Not every beautiful thing needs to be justified.
Not every reward needs to arrive after exhaustion.

Sometimes sweetness is allowed to simply be sweet.

🌹🍯

I only have a few jars of Necuhtli on the apothecary shelf right now, made in a small batch here in New Mexico.
https://our-littlenook.myshopify.com/products/necuhtli-rose-cinnamon-whipped-honey

But today, more than asking you to buy honey, I'm curious about something else:

What is one small sweetness life is offering you right now - and are you letting yourself receive it?

🌬 WindWork® Wednesday • Releasing One Wind, Welcoming Another

At the beginning of each month, I like to return to the winds.

Not because the calendar suddenly erases everything that came before.

But because a new month gives me a moment to notice:

What has completed?
What am I carrying forward?
And what wind is asking to walk with me now?

Today I took a Wind Walk.

I let myself move slowly enough to notice the air, the land, my breath, and the small things I might otherwise pass by.

When I felt ready, I opened sacred space.

Facing East, I called to Eurus.
Then South, to Notus.
West, to Zephyrus.
North, to Boreas.

Three breaths of the Wind Whistle for each direction.

Not to command the winds.

To acknowledge them.

To orient myself.

To remember that I am standing somewhere inside a larger living world.

🌬️

Inside that sacred space, I thanked the wind that walked with me through August:

Laʻamaomao - Ancestor.
Build a Strong Foundation.

August carried so much around foundation for me.

Family.
Belonging.
Movement.
What holds.
What changes.
What we carry from those who came before us.
And now, with gratitude, I release that wind.

Not because her teaching is finished forever.
But because I am making room to listen for what comes next.

For September, I welcome:

Mari - Gift.
Accept Your Rewards.

And already, that feels like a very different question.

Not: What more do I need to prove?

Not: What else should I carry?

But: What am I willing to receive?

Renee Baribeau writes of Mari as a wind connected with the South - with needs, desires, emotions, nourishment, and the gifts that sometimes arrive after difficulty. She also asks us to notice where we may be abandoning our own knowing in order to follow what others expect.

That feels like an important September practice for me.

✨To notice what is arriving.
✨To receive without immediately questioning whether I have earned it.
✨To stay close to my own knowing.
✨And to remember that accepting a gift can require just as much openness as asking for one.

🌬️

When the work felt complete, I thanked the cardinal winds and released sacred space with three blows of the whistle in each direction.

And now I begin September with a new question:

What if the next part of the journey is not asking me to push harder - but to become more available to what is already trying to meet me?

🌾 From the Field Journal • What We Gather

Late summer has me looking at the land differently...

A few months ago, I was watching for what was emerging.

New growth.
First flowers.
Tender leaves.
The beginning of fruit.

Now I find myself looking for something else.

What is ready to be gathered?

🌾

Working with plants has taught me that gathering isn't simply taking what is available.

It is paying attention.
Is the plant ready?
Is there enough?
What needs to remain for seed?
What belongs to the birds, insects and other lives sharing this land?
What can be gathered now - and what needs more time?

Sometimes the answer is simply: Leave it.

And I think there is something worth carrying from that practice into our own lives.

As August comes to an end, I have been thinking about what these past few months have given me.

What I want to keep.
What I want to preserve.
What has taught me something.
What I have enough of to share.
And what needs to be left where it is.

Maybe that is part of harvest, too.

Not gathering everything we can -
but learning to recognize what is ours to carry forward.

🌾🌬️

Tomorrow September begins.

The land here in New Mexico isn't suddenly going to become autumn because the calendar changes. There will still be heat. Still flowers. Still growing.

But something is shifting.

And for the next little while, I want to pay attention to the Gathering...

The plants.
The seeds.
The food.
The medicine.
The lessons.
The people around the table.
And all the small things we choose to carry with us into another season.

So as August closes, I'm curious:

What are you gathering from this season?

Not necessarily something you can hold in your hands.

What are you carrying forward?

🕯️ Sunday at the Nook • Tending What Is Sacred

Before I begin another week,

I tend the altar.
I clear what has finished.
Refresh the water.
Straighten what has shifted.
Light a candle.
Make an offering.
And sit for a little while with what remains.

There is something about this small practice that brings me back to myself.

Not because everything suddenly becomes clear.
Not because I have all the answers.
But because tending an altar asks me to pay attention.

To what I am carrying.
To what I am grateful for.
To what has been supporting me quietly.
To what I am ready to lay down.
And to what deserves to be carried forward.

🌾

This feels especially meaningful at the end of August.

Outside, the land is making seed.

Some things are still blooming.
Some are ripening.
Some are drying and returning.

Yesterday I wrote about learning that not everything is ours to gather.

I think the same is true in our own lives.

Not everything needs to come with us.
Some things can be thanked and released.
Some things need tending.
Some things are becoming the seeds of whatever comes next.
So today's offering is simple.

Gratitude for what has carried me.
Respect for what is ending.
And a little space for what I cannot see yet.

🕯️🌾

Before another week begins, perhaps there is a question worth sitting with:

What do I want to carry forward - and what am I ready to leave at the altar?

🔥 Friday at the Apothecary • What's on the Shelf

I've spent a lot of this week talking about the turning season.

About noticing.
Listening.
Paying attention to what the land - and the body - begin asking for as we move toward September.

But today I thought I'd simply show you what is actually sitting on the shelves at Our Little Nook right now.

Not a huge inventory.
Not boxes and boxes of product.
Just small batches of things I've made here in New Mexico, one jar, pouch, bundle, and tin at a time.

Right now you'll find:

🌺 Círculo de Calor • Circle of Warmth
Hibiscus and warming spices - lovely steaming in a mug when the evening cools, and just as delicious poured over ice while August is still being August.

🌿 Chamiso + Rosemary Body Butter
Rich herbal body care for skin that has lived through New Mexico sun, wind, work, and dry air.

🍯 Necuhtli Whipped Honey
Rose + cinnamon whipped honey. Soft, floral, gently spiced, and especially lovely stirred into tea.

🔥 Humo Bendito
Little bundles of sage for smoke, prayer, clearing, and intentional moments.

💋 Peppermint Lip Balm
Simple, cooling, and one of those little things I seem to reach for constantly in our dry climate.

And there are soaps, hydrosols, herbal teas, balms, firestarters, and a few other offerings tucked onto the shelves too.

Some I have four of.
Some only two or three.
The lip balm, thankfully, I have plenty of. 😄

That's the rhythm of a little apothecary.

Things are made.
Things find their people.
The shelf empties.

And I make again.

🌿

So if you've been quietly following along this week and something has caught your attention, this is your invitation to come wander through the apothecary.

No special occasion required.

Maybe you're looking for something for yourself.
Maybe you're gathering a small gift for someone you love.

Or maybe you're simply curious about what I've been making over here in my little corner of New Mexico.

Either way, the door is open. 🤎

🌬️ WindWork® Wednesday • The Body Is a Compass

Last week I spent three days attending the Body Wisdom Summit listening to teachers explore something I keep returning to in my own work:

What changes when we stop treating the body as something to override and begin listening to it as a source of information?

The gathering explored the body's intelligence, our relationship with natural cycles, and what it might mean to live in greater rhythm with ourselves and the world around us.

Renee Baribeau closed the summit with The Body is a Compass: How Nature's Rhythms Restore Inner Authority.

And that language stayed with me.

The body as compass.

Not someone outside of me telling me where to go.
Not the mind trying to reason its way through every uncertainty.

But learning to notice the information already moving through body, emotion, intuition, environment - and wind.

🌬️ In my WindWork® this week, I am sitting with two cards:

Southeast Cloud Wind - Resilience
Bounce Back from Challenge.

and

Laʻamaomao - Ancestor
Build a Strong Foundation.

At first, resilience was the word that caught me.

But the longer I sit with these two together, the more interested I become in the relationship between them.

Because what allows us to bend without breaking?
What helps us return after difficulty?
What makes resilience possible?

Maybe sometimes it isn't about becoming tougher.
Maybe it is about remembering what we are rooted in.

Our practices.
Our relationships.
Our ancestors.
The land.
The body.

The things that remind us who we are when life has moved us away from our center.

And there is another piece I keep noticing.

In the Body Compass Renee shared, the Southeast speaks to:

Emotional Support • Connection • Belonging • Receiving

with the question: What supports me?

That lands differently beside a card asking me to bounce back from challenge.

Because resilience doesn't necessarily mean doing it alone.

Sometimes resilience may look like allowing ourselves to be supported.

Receiving.
Belonging.
Returning to foundation.
Returning to center.
Returning to the body's own knowing.

So that is where my WindWork® is taking me this week.

Not toward an answer.

Toward a question:

🌬️ When life moves you off center, what helps you find your way back?

🍵 Tea Table Tuesday • Círculo de Calor

Círculo de Calor.

In English, Circle of Warmth.

And this little ruby-red tea has been finding its way back onto my tea table as we move through these last days of August.

It is a simple blend of three plants:

🌺 Jamaica / Hibiscus - tart, fruity, deeply colored, and naturally rich in plant compounds called polyphenols. Hibiscus has also been studied for its relationship with cardiovascular health.

🤎 Canela / Cinnamon - warming, aromatic, and traditionally used to support digestion. It rounds out the tartness of the hibiscus with that familiar, comforting spice.

✨ Anis / Anise - sweet, fragrant, and traditionally used after meals to support digestion and settle the belly.

Together, they make one of those teas that seems to understand this particular moment of the year.

Because Círculo de Calor is delicious hot or cold.

On a cool morning, or later in the evening when the sun has gone down and I can finally feel that little hint of change in the New Mexico air, I love it warm - steeped slowly, held between both hands, sometimes with just a touch of honey.

But then there are our August afternoons. ☀️

When the sun is still high, I've been outside working, and absolutely nothing about the day feels like autumn yet...

That same deep-red infusion poured over a tall glass of ice becomes something entirely different.

Bright.
Tart.
Refreshing.
Spiced just enough to keep it interesting.

Add a slice of ORANGE 🧡 or lime and it makes a beautiful afternoon herbal drink.

And maybe that's why I'm reaching for this particular blend right now.

Warm when the season whispers that change is coming.
Cold when summer reminds us she isn't finished yet.

A little cup for living between the two. 🌺🍵

🌿 Days at the Apothecary

Have you noticed it yet?

Not autumn exactly.

Not yet.

The afternoons are still hot here in New Mexico. The sun still carries summer in it. The garden is still producing, the insects are still busy, and much of the land still looks like August.

But something is changing.

I notice it in the light.
I notice it in the wind...

The sun sets a little earlier now. Shadows stretch differently across the land. Flowers are giving way to seed. Plants that spent the summer growing are beginning to ripen, dry, fruit, or turn their energy inward.

There is a subtle shift from Growing toward Gathering.

And I love this part of the year because the change doesn't arrive all at once.

It whispers.

🌾 Look at what has grown.

🌿 Notice what is ready.

🪶 Gather what you need.

🌬️ Begin making room for what comes next.

In my own work, this is when I begin turning my attention toward the West - toward harvest, gratitude, culmination, and eventually, release.

So over the next few weeks, I'll be sharing a little more from the apothecary around this seasonal turning: the plants I'm gathering, the teas I'm reaching for, what I'm making, and some of the simple practices that help me move with the season rather than rush ahead of it.

But today, no rushing.

Just noticing.

Step outside sometime today and look around.🌾🌬️

What is telling you that the season is beginning to change?
