I have been thinking a lot about what we mean when we talk about self care.

To be cared for, or about has a deep and grounding quality. It makes us feel as though we belong and that we matter.

In our current time many of the factors that we have depended on for feeling grounded have shifted, and now certainty in the way we once may have felt it is gone.

However there are at least 2 constants in this moment. Your existence and your reliance on the natural world.

Last night I shoveled the driveway of about 8 inches of accumulated snow. It was dark, still and quiet… when I had finished the laborious job I payed myself in a snow bank and closed my eyes.. listened to my beating heat and felt the snow mist sparkle dust kiss my face sweetly.

I felt a deep quality of care, a belonging and mattering in being on the gorgeous nurturing earth.

She reminded me that everyday she stands at my door asking me to care for myself accepting the invitation to play in the belonging.

May we all belong, matter and feel a deep quality of care for ourselves and for the ones who hold us.

A remarkable amount of understanding and clarity can come from engaging in creative practice… feeling your way through a drawing with non judgement, and release of the need to make “art”

By being with a question, making representation, shifting perspective and adding what we want and removing or altering what needs to change help us surface an emerging future.

Releasing creative contraction through mark making. I really fun and potentially profound learning process.

I am certainly feeling the resistance to the cold, I am inclined to stay tightly tucked into my cozy home…

I know this familiar feeling of attuning myself to the hibernation season, yet I am not a bear, and I must move my body out of doors to keep myself clear minded and strong.

Winter for me requires a lot of planning, a lot of preparation to engage nourishing and creative practice.

Building fires in the snow with hot coffee and lunch packed to bring along, stomping designed in the white drifts in the back fields, or cross country skiing down to the neighboring farm looking for turkey feathers.

In winter I am also called to find solace in more baking, small projects and decluttering my home and mind. I will spend my time being quiet, reading, recharging, reorganizing, and resting like the Aspen, Apple and Maple trees, I will quietly flow like the river under its top coat of ice and snow.

I will follow Natures rhythms and directions of being rather than doing this winter, as She sings the sweet song of slowing.

It is the season of rest.

We have snow cover here in Vermont, at least where I live. The air is crisp and cold. The days are short and the golden hour happens much earlier in the day. These are the days when I begin to think about enoughness.

This is the time of year for recovery, for rest, for moments of stillness and quiet. It's a good time to catch up on reading, have deeper conversations and listen to each others stories.

The winter season we are coming into here in the NE is really one of slowing down, however our culture of holiday frenzy has us embracing the myths of more and behaving in a kind of cognitive dissonance. More gifts, more shopping, more spending, more extraction, more exploitation, more packaging, more trash, more exhaustion for ourselves and the planet.

So what if in this intended time of rest we embrace the idea of less as more.... there is beauty in simplicity.

What might you offer yourself and others this year that builds resilience, stimulates creativity, or allows you to work on what brings meaning and purpose to life

Being appreciative everyday.

May you be happy, healthy and nourished by nature, your relationships, meaningful work and self compassion.

Rest with gratitude today.

How are you in relationship with the 4 primary connections? Nature. Other people. Meaningful work. Your own body. Being too much in your mind can pull you out of connection. Go outside consider the support you receive from the ground you stand upon, tell someone how much you appreciate them, remind yourself about why you engage with doing something you love, and remember that every millimeter of your warm soft body is worth loving

Reflecting:

I’ve just finished listening to Gathering Moss by Robin Wall Kimmerer indegenous botanist. This gorgeous book like Tyson Yunkaporta’s equally gorgeous book, Sand Talk deserves to be embodied, felt within your living human system.

Did you know that of the 5 senses hearing is the most similar to touch? When sound waves come in contact with the eardrum it is akin to physical touch and feeling sensation. We feel our way with sound and words. And perhaps that is why storytelling is and can be such a powerful tool for learning and transformation.

Listening to both of these books read by their authors, while resting or relaxing (being in the parasympathetic nervous system… rest and digest) is a very intimate experience and allows for an undisrupted experience of listening, learning, reflecting and making creative connection (engaging the default mode network of the brain.. often called the creative network)

Listening to the last chapter of Gathering Moss in a hot bath, with the night sky in the window, hearing about Goblin’s Gold Moss, and it’s hidden but almost magically ethereal life and relationship with elusive light, moist caves and trees helps me to embody more the experience as a being of human decent, rather than a human being.

Both of these books are now currently living in me, informing my thinking about sence of place, sense making, interdependence. Shifting for me, complexity into “exquisite complexity” as Robin Wall Kimmerer reframes and what it means when reminded that we are a custodial species as Tyson Yunkaporta states.

These generous offerings are also really helpful in connecting and locating more meaning and understanding in meaning making tools like Dave Snowden’s Cynefin and how we might engage through complexity of intersectional context in Courageous Conversations and many practices offered in Laura Storm’s Regenerative Leadership.

There comes a time when we have to step fully into our own integrity.

Many years ago I realized that there was a rhythm to life, one that I thought both complex and obvious… I’ve always called it my WRC ethic. This makes us and makes whatever we put our full into .

Having a WRC ethic involves having a deep understanding about the work you engage in and how and why it is and fills you with . It’s also involves discovering and makIng an non negotiable commitment to rest and living. And it involves engaging in creative in what ever form that takes for you… something for its own sake that allows creative discovery. This is a regenerative equation. It’s what I want you to discover… so step in fully. It’s time to create your WRC ethic.

INTUITIVE MARK MAKING: RELEASING CREATIVE CONTRACTION IN THE BODY AND MIND

Sat, Sep 18, 2021 9:00 AM Sun, Sep 19, 2021 6:30 PM

Intuitive Mark Making is a workshop designed to reconnect individuals to a fundamental and primary human experience of creative play. Creativity is built into our DNA, but many of us suffer from crippling creative wounding which evidences itself in insecurity and fear of vulnerability when considering the process of being openly creative. Creativity is our natural mechanism of problem solving and a generative activity, it allows us to explore ideas playfully and without fear of failure. This workshop is designed to help individuals reengage with the idea of creative practice through building somatic awareness, deep listening skills and being in non judgement with the act of mark making.
