The Fit: A bunch of red. This slim fit Jos A Bank suit with Calvin Klein shirt and Dior silk tie is a frequent monochrome go-to in my wardrobe.

The Situation: A night out singing Bobby Darin and Frank Sinatra at a local joint in Central Vermont is a great opportunity to bust out these digs. Red can be quite bold so circumstances may dictate against this for some events. However, to stand out this is definitely a great option.

The Fit: Jones New York three piece pinstripe suit in three button pattern with Alex Vando shirt and thrifted necktie.

The Situation: As a contractor looking professional and being mobile while wearing clothes that stay fresh in a variety of environments is important. This thrifted suit was only $10, the shirt stain resistant, and I feel comfortable everywhere from a dusty attic to murky alleyways.

Thr Comment: "You dressed right for this event!"

The Fit: Portfolio slim fit peak lapel three piece suit in black, paired with white spread collar shirt by Charles Tyrwhitt and a black woolen overcoat by Jones New York.

The Situation: Finding the right suit to work formal events can be challenging. It's a mix of finding the right tones with the right capability for your role. As a security consultant and contractor I try to both blend with the attending population and stand out while giving me room for gear, mobility, and is purchased at a price point that is easily replaceable if my evening goes awry. This fit is largely "No nonsense" (although, if you know me, the nonsense level is generally quite high).

The Comment: "Are you security?" Yes. I'm doing my job securing the hors devours and making friends with the riff raff in the parking lot.

The Fit: Tommy Hilfiger pinstripe suit, Calvin Klein french cuff shirt, J Ferrar tie, overcoat by London Fog.

The Situation: Back when I was employed as a security contractor, we often had formal attire for specific clientele. The company I worked for requested black suit, white shirt, and black tie, which circumstantially blended well. These days when on assignment I prefer monochromatic suits on assignment.

The Comment: "Its like winter in Gotham." That got a big smile from me.

The Fit: Vintage leather jacket, Kenneth Cole Awareness button down, Groove Life belt, Wrangler Stretch jeans, Citizen PCAT Eco-Drive watch.

The Situation: The measure of capability stretches from formality to ruthlessness and everywhere in between. A ruthless man need not sacrifice good taste for tough tasks. This vintage leather jacket was thrifted for a steal, Wrangler stretch denim is both tasteful, lightweight even when wet, quick drying and allows for any task to be accomplished with flexible durability. From woods to the street to the seat of this 25 year old Landcruiser, the Fit matches tools for the job.

The Fit: Stafford peak lapel slim fit suit, Charles Tyrwhitt slim fit semi-spread shirt, and vintage skinny tie.

The Situation: Public speaking can be daunting and having confidence in the situation is key. Confidence is all part of effective communication and, as we all know, effective communication solves 99.9999% of problems. When selecting this suit it was important to bring welcoming warmth and professionalism with a flair of personality.

Brass tacks, let's get down to it...

My business partner at Menace Productions, LLC (an events management company that focuses on community building through alternative arts events) and I are in constant communication about community, events, what we want to be doing and whats going on. Recently our conversations have taken a heavy slant into safety and security practices at events. Evacuation planning, VIP protection, threat responses, first aid/medical intervention, etc etc etc.

It's wonderful to have organizations being proactive with security and I've been lucky to act as an Emergency Management Consultant through Gold Thread Coaching for a few organizations and individuals.

Gold Thread's focus has always been about empowering individuals and making sure folks feel safe is the first step towards that goal.

The Fit: Tazio slim fit suit, shirt by Axcess, tie by J Ferrar, watch by Citizen, and gradient prescription glasses from Eye Buy Direct.

The Situation: This combination is a chameleon, at home in anything from courtroom to groomsman and everything in between. With proper fit and finish it is as elegant and formal, shades of black and white denote a serious nature that is lifted with the light gray suit and gently patterned shirt. Probably not recommended for daily use hanging drywall or wrenching motors but when the day is done this look stands out for date night and doesn't break the bank.

The Fit: Jos. A. Bank slim fit maroon suit, contrast collar french cuff shirt, vintage Italian silk tie.

The Situation: Dark colors definitely present a different vibe when it comes to mens suits. Gone is the playfulness of a seersucker or the chipper of floral patters, replaced with the panashe of rich, dark hues and bold paisley. While this look may be out of place on the alter it certainly is at home in urban nightlife.

The Fit: Khaki corduroy slacks, French cuff Calvin Klein shirt, and pink slim fit blazer purchased from my favorite vintage store, Old Gold in Burlington, VT.

The comment from a passerby: "I like that pink on you, boo!"

The situation: A casual day out in New York City should only be so casual. Its easy enough to add a pop of color and contrast while offering the versatility if many pockets (and the security of an inside pocket), and little extra warmth, and to make sure you stand out even in the vibrance of Harlem and bustle of Times Square.

The cost: Approximately $150 including PUMA sneakers and GrooveLife belt (which operates just as well in working environments as it does to hold up business slacks.

The confidence: I love being able to blend and stand out and have clothes that offer the extreme versatility that my life demands. One moment having a bourbon neat at the Hard Rock can be quickly followed by a city-wide bike ride. And this fit exudes the confidence needed to handle any situation.

"Level 5 leaders are a study in duality: modest and willful, humble and fearless," Jim Collins, Good to Great.

I recently started a third company, a mobile car detailing business, and posted a picture of myself drenched in sweat in the back of a Toyota 4Runner. I spent over six hours in the heat and humidity near Lake Champlain in Colchester deep cleaning the vehicle, which belonged to a long time client of mine. Later, a friend and creative partner messaged me, "We want the Chairman of the Board, save the sweat for winter."

He was referring to the fact that I've built a social media brand on men's fashion, suits and apparel and generally refined appearance. Being drenched, dirty and clad in a t-shirt is generally off-brand. Yes, I am a debonair man and believe that our appearance matters greatly. However every great organization is built on a bit of blood, sweat, and tears. Having grown and helped grow many organizations on my own BS&T (blood, sweat, and tears...or maybe bu****it and tact) I recognize that building a strong brand from the ground up will require some level of discomfort. How that discomfort is dealt with will define how the identity of an organization will navigate through the future.

At 3am in a blizzard on the quarter mile stretch of a dealership lot, running a Ford F250 at near 30mph with a 8.5 foot Fischer V-plow and a full load of snow, fully in my element, I recognized the importance of "no matter what the place has to run." It doesn't take a special breed to be able to do these things (nor is BS&T the only way for organizations to find success), just the a certain acceptance that personal growth is never in the comfort zone. The more we stretch that growth zone, the more we can conquer our own anxieties, the more we conquer our own anxieties, the higher the mountains we can climb.

"It is very important to grasp that Level 5 leadership is not just about humility and modesty. It is equally about ferocious resolve, an almost stoic determination to do whatever needs to be done to make the company great," Jim Collins, Good to Great.

Your appearance matters. While we squishy little meat sacks haven't really evolved much in the last thousand years we have evolved some truly amazing traits over the last billion or so years. One of, if not the most important, trait is instinct and intuition. "Intuition is the journey from A to Z without stopping at any other letter along the way. It is knowing without knowing why," Gavin de Becker, The Gift of Fear.

This trait is your brain's natural instinct to form conclusions on someone in anywhere from 1/10th to 3 seconds. It's the cut of your clothes, your body language, facial expression and features. It is the literal foundation of your relationships with another party. Those in sales and politics know this all too well, that client and constituent are formulating game-changing opinions in this time on things like trustworthiness and likeability. This translates to everything from landing jobs at interviews to successful first dates.

And it's not like we don't think about how we look. We choose whether to care about our appearance when we wake up. I remember trying to provide someone shoes for a wedding and while husband liked the shoes wife scoffed as they were "Too fashionable," and may appear, idk, zesty in an embarrassing way. It was a vain attempt at modesty, one that we all have encountered.

That same energy can be put into adjusting yourself in a way that is magnetic, expressive, and appropriate for the days events. And who knows what opportunities lie on the other side of that door...
