Today I want to share the Hukam with you.
In the Sikh tradition a Hukam is a sacred message received from the Siri Guru Granth Sahib after prayer and meditation.
The word Hukam can be translated as Divine Order or Command.
We do not read Hukam to predict the future.
We read Hukam to listen.
To step out of the constant movement of the mind for a moment and allow another perspective to enter.
A perspective beyond fear, emotion, overthinking or personal preference.
Sometimes the Hukam feels comforting.
Sometimes confronting.
Sometimes incredibly direct.
And sometimes we only understand it much later.
For many people it becomes a daily practice.
A way to begin the day in relationship with something greater than the personality.
Instead of asking:
“What do I want?”
The practice of reading ahukam beings us to:
“What is life asking from me today?”
GAUREE, FIFTH MEHL:
You are my Advisor; You are always with me.
You preserve, protect and care for me. || 1 ||
Such is the Lord, our Help and Support in this world and the next.
He protects the honor of His servant, O my Sibling of Destiny. || 1 || Pause ||
He alone exists hereafter; this place is in His Power.
Twenty-four hours a day, O my mind, chant and meditate on the Lord. || 2 ||
His honor is acknowledged, and he bears the True Insignia;
the Lord Himself issues His Royal Command. || 3 ||
He Himself is the Giver; He Himself is the Cherisher.
Continually, continuously, O Nanak, dwell upon the Name of the Lord. || 4 || 105 || 174 ||
