Tutoring sessions are free, and can take place at any public location. RAALP is a non-profit that trains volunteer community members and provides them with materials to tutor individuals:
a) English speakers who have no/low level reading skills
b) Speakers of other languages who want to learn to speak/read English.

πŸΎπŸ“– WORD WEDNESDAY MEETS NATIONAL DOG DAY!

Today we're celebrating two things we love: words and our four-legged companions! 🐢

Our word of the week is COMPANION.

Companion (noun) β€” a person or animal who spends time with you or keeps you company.

Dogs have certainly earned that title! They can be our walking companions, reading companions, study buddies, and loyal friends. ❀️

πŸ“šπŸΎ Your Challenge:
Can you use companion in a sentence?

Bonus points if your sentence includes your favorite dog! πŸ˜‚
You can also share a pic of your pup!!!

Share your sentence in the comments! πŸ‘‡

Happy National Dog Day from all of us at RAALP! πŸ’™

πŸ“š Remembering Dolly Parton: A Legacy of Literacy

Today, we remember Dolly Partonβ€”not only for the music and stories she gave the world, but for the millions of children she helped introduce to the joy of reading.

In 1995, Dolly created the Imagination Library, inspired by her father, who was unable to read and write. What began as a program serving children in her home county of East Tennessee grew into a worldwide literacy movement.

Dolly once said:

β€œInspiring kids to love to read became my mission.”

That mission has reached millions of children, putting books directly into their hands and helping families build a love of reading together.

She also understood something wonderfully simple:

β€œYou can never get enough books into the hands of enough children.”

For those of us working in literacy, those words carry tremendous weight.

At RAALP, we see every day how literacy can open doorsβ€”to opportunity, confidence, independence, stronger families, and a greater connection to the community.

Dolly's legacy reminds us that literacy isn't simply about learning to read words. It's about giving people the opportunity to imagine what their lives can become.

Her songs will continue to be sung. Her stories will continue to be told. And because of the Imagination Library, millions of children will continue opening books and discovering new worlds.

Thank you, Dolly, for making literacy part of your life's missionβ€”and for reminding us all just how powerful a book can be. πŸ“šβ€οΈ

From all of us at the Rio Arriba Adult Literacy Program, thank you.

Our volunteer tutors are at the heart of RAALP, sharing their time, encouragement, and knowledge to help adult learners build confidence and reach their goals.

Here's what Laura Mullane had to share:

I began as an adult literacy/ESL tutor with RAALP earlier this year. I'm passionate about adult literacy because language is how we connect and make our way through the world. Being able to confidently speak, read, and write is incredibly important for both our everyday lives and our relationships with other people. Also, I believe adults who pursue literacy education can help the next generation learn and grow to become lifelong learners themselves. I'm always inspired by people who come to this country speaking little to no English and are committed to learning it, and I hope I can help them on their journey.

Thank you for making a difference! Interested in becoming a tutor? You don't have to be a teacherβ€”just a passion for helping others learn. πŸ’™

πŸ“š Monday Motivation

You don't have to know everything. You just have to be willing to keep learning.

Learning can happen at any age, and sometimes the biggest accomplishment is simply having the courage to try something new.

At RAALP, we celebrate every step forwardβ€”every new word, every page read, every skill practiced, and every goal pursued. πŸ’™

🌱 This week's reminder: Progress doesn't have to be perfect. It just has to keep moving forward.

What is something you'd like to learn or improve this week?
