Golden Retrievers are always Fun to paint because their coats are anything but simply “gold.” This sweet face gave me an opportunity to layer soft yellows, warm browns and subtle shadows to create all that beautiful flowing fur. I especially love how the dark background makes those golden tones glow!

Every pet has something unique to capture, and turning those details into an Inspiring Watercolor portrait is one of my favorite things to do here in Erie Colorado.

🎨 My studio has a painting problem... there are piles of them EVERYWHERE!

When you teach as many watercolor workshops and online tutorials as I do, the paintings start adding up FAST. And I just can’t bring myself to throw them away.

They may be teaching demonstrations rather than paintings from one of my larger fine art collections, but they’re still original, hand-painted watercolors that I put real time and care into. Some took me 2+ hours to paint!

So I decided they deserve homes instead of piles. ❤️

I’ve uploaded a bunch of my Teaching Originals to my online shop. For about the cost of a tube of watercolor paint, or a couple tubes depending on the detail, you can own an original, hand-painted piece of art!

I’m now booking holiday pet portraits! If you’re looking for a truly unique gift for someone who adores their pet, a custom Watercolor portrait is pretty hard to beat. ❤️

This sweet black and white pup was especially Fun to paint. With this coloring, the challenge is finding all of the subtle blues, warm grays and deep shadows hiding within what initially looks like simply black and white fur. And those warm brown eyes against the cool coat really bring the whole portrait to life!

Creating Inspiring pet portraits from my studio in Erie Colorado is one of my favorite parts of what I do.

We're keeping things simple and focusing on one beautiful Cherry for tomorrow's real-time watercolor tutorial!

This is a great lesson for practicing some of the fundamentals of watercolor. We'll use layers of color to turn a simple shape into something dimensional while working on highlights, shadows, smooth transitions, and that beautiful glossy surface.

I'll paint the entire cherry slowly and step-by-step so you can follow along with me in real time.

And here he is... the other side of "Miles." 😂

Apparently, Miles is not a fan of going on walks without his owner present, and I think his expression says everything that needs to be said. Lol.

I told you guys, the two extremes of this little guy’s personality were entertaining! Put this painting next to the happy, bright eyed Miles from my last post, and he looks like a completely different dog.

This is exactly why I enjoy painting pet portraits so much. Our animals have personalities, moods and expressions that we know by heart. Capturing those little details in Watercolor is what makes each portrait so personal and so much Fun for me to paint.

One of my favorite parts of being a watercolor artist is getting to paint your pets. There’s something really special about trying to capture not only what an animal looks like, but the little expressions and quirks that make them them. ❤️

This week I had the pleasure of painting "Miles" not once, but twice! This little pup is full of personality, so his owner asked me to create two paintings that capture both extremes. Lol. This is the first one. Stay tuned for painting number two!

Over the years, I’ve painted dogs, cats, horses, bunnies, birds and plenty of other beloved animals. Every portrait is different, and I genuinely enjoy getting to know each animal through the photos and stories their owners share with me.

I’m now booking holiday pet portraits. If you have someone on your gift list who already has everything, a custom watercolor of an animal they love can be a pretty meaningful surprise.

My painting schedule has become very full, and I can comfortably complete only one pet portraits per week while giving each painting the time and attention it deserves. If you’re considering one for the holidays, I encourage you to reach out early so I can reserve a place for you on my schedule.

Grab your blues! Tomorrow we're painting a Blueberry in watercolor.

In this real-time watercolor tutorial, I'll walk you through the painting step-by-step as we build layers of blue, create the blueberry's natural texture, add subtle highlights, and use shadows to give it a realistic three-dimensional shape.

As always, I paint at a slow, comfortable pace so you can follow along with me from beginning to end.
