This week in Garden Clubs… We dug up potatoes, carrots, and other ingredients, and sent each student home with a bag full and a soup recipe.

Digging up potatoes

Cut flowers and made bouquets

Washing carrots

Cut into a perfectly ripe melon hiding in the garden

Found a second flush of raspberries. Fire ants like them too!

Made pesto with fresh basil

Made kale salad with Craisins and sunflower seeds. Sampled: Delicata squash and its roasted seeds, cucumbers and dip, and fresh apple slices from one of our elementary school sites.

Ate the rainbow!

It was Erie Farm to School’s first week of fall garden clubs and there’s lots to eat! At East middle school, we discovered a monarch butterfly with a small “sticker” attached to its wing, presumably to track its winter migration to the Yucatán Peninsula in Mexico 🇲🇽 . At Wilson middle school, we found tomato hornworms munching on their favorite food… tomatoes! Unfortunately for these hungry caterpillars, there is something else who likes to eat THEM… parasitic wasps lay their eggs on the backs of these large caterpillars and when they hatch, they eat their way from the inside out, killing the hornworms. Another circle of life lesson from the garden 🪏 🪴

This week in garden clubs, we explored seeds and soil, thanking both the rain and the sun!
