At TED 2022 I met an artist named Melissa Mahoney and we did a TED-Ed Lesson collaboration about expressing your emotions through art and poetry. She did the visual arts lesson and I did the poetry one. I just remembered it. And since I’ve reconnected with Mattie‘s mom, I think he might have been the starfish in the poem.

Our brains are powerful pattern decoders. I have a video of my youngest daughter, saying “and the dish runned away with the spoon.” This is not a mistake. This is evidence of the powerful decoding nature of the brain. Steven Pinker’s book “Words and Rules” helped me understand that.

We need to honor the analytical nature of young minds by presenting the code first with the lowercase letters and letter sounds. Read to your little ones to build a robust vocabulary. And do lots of rhyming for the mind to pick up on the patterns of the spoken language. It’s the simplicity of foundational literacy that is important. Offering too much too soon is what complicates it. Keep it simple.
