This week is Chemical Technical Professionals Week and the Gannon University Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry celebrates our own Jerry Phelps!

Jerry plays a vital role in creating safe, organized, and positive laboratory experiences for students taking chemistry laboratory courses. But his impact goes beyond the lab! Jerry mentors student workers, helping them build confidence, strengthen their chemistry skills, and gain valuable experience that prepares them for their future careers.

Thank you, Jerry, for all you do for our students and our programs!

Students participating in the Gannon University Regional Summer School of Excellence (RiSSE) explored the fascinating nanoworld with Gannon University Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry faculty, discovering how nanotechnology impacts everyday life and helps protect our environment.

Students synthesized gold nanoparticles and used them as nanosensors to determine which sports drink contained the highest concentration of electrolytes to help replenish the body after exercise. The surprise winner? Pickle juice had the most electrolytes!

❤️ Red comes from strontium compounds.
🤍 White is produced by burning magnesium or aluminum.
💙 Blue comes from copper compounds, but it's one of the most challenging colors for chemists to create because it requires just the right temperature.
