Students participating in the Gannon University Regional Summer School of Excellence (RiSSE) explored the fascinating nanoworld with Gannon University Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry faculty, discovering how nanotechnology impacts everyday life and helps protect our environment.

Students synthesized gold nanoparticles and used them as nanosensors to determine which sports drink contained the highest concentration of electrolytes to help replenish the body after exercise. The surprise winner? Pickle juice had the most electrolytes!

As we celebrate the Fourth of July, take a moment to appreciate the chemistry behind the spectacular fireworks lighting up the night sky!

โค๏ธ Red comes from strontium compounds.
๐Ÿค White is produced by burning magnesium or aluminum.
๐Ÿ’™ Blue comes from copper compounds, but it's one of the most challenging colors for chemists to create because it requires just the right temperature.

๐ŸŽ† Happy Independence Day from the Gannon University Chemistry and Biochemistry! ๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธ
