Shortly after 5 this evening, while doing our cleaning and laundry, I noticed a strong smell of something burning in our storage room. It wasn't long before the smell had traveled through our ventilation system and throughout the building. I called 911 and explained the situation, fearing I may have a fire in the walls. I thought the smell was from our clothes dryer. Multiple city fire units were dispatched to the facility as it was being reported as a commercial structure fire. No smoke was ever noticed, but the smell was very strong. The remaining children from the building were evacuated to the playground. The children were very excited to see all the firemen and firetrucks pulling in! Multiple firemen came in and I directed them to where I thought the issue was. They agreed that there was no smoke but there was a strong smell around the dryer. The firemen checked the facility but focused on the storage room. They felt around the dryer and felt a few warm spots, but nothing extreme. They ran a TIC (Thermal Imaging Camera) on the walls around the dryer to make sure there was no fire in the walls. No actual fire was found. However, at this point, I am left with a strong smell permeating the whole facility.

We were advised by the fire department to replace the dryer.

Because the smell in the facility is so strong, we will need to close tomorrow. The staff will be working to clean the center thoroughly in the hopes that we are able to get the smell out. I don't feel safe having everyone at the facility with that smell. It gave me a headache so I can only imagine what it would do to others. I also want to ensure that any personal items belonging to the children that may have been exposed to the smell spreading through the ventilation system, are washed before the children use them.

The dryer contained some personal belongings of the children (blankets, clothes). I brought the items all home to rewash them, however the smell may have ruined them. I will keep you posted on anything that was affected.

We should be able to take care of everything tomorrow. My licensing rep stopped in about an hour before this happened and was still in town. He was notified and will stop in tomorrow to file a report.

The staff did wonderful evacuating the children. The kiddos weren't sure what was going on, but the staff remained calm, which kept them calm.

Once again, I apologize for any inconvenience this may cause. The safety of the children is always a priority. If you have any questions or concerns, please let me know. If you see this email, please acknowledge that you have seen it. We will have to call anyone that has not seen
